  • Advice on creating a semi-prof studio

I wasn’t sure where to post this. I thought it was kind of “gear” related. Sorry if I posted it in the wrong place.

My friend and I are turning a two car garage area into a home studio. While it won’t be a million dollar studio or anything it should still be fairly professional in the end. We will probably start with a Roland VS-2480 DVD as our main workstation.

We are currently framing the walls. As we are both new to the “studio” world, we have a bunch of initial questions. I am sure there are some seasoned studio people on this board. Would anyone be able to answer some of these questions?

If possible would anyone be available to talk to us and help guide us in this?

    Questions:
1.) Wiring (best way to wire the live room and the control room)
    - microphone (XLR) cables/jacks, best way to incorporate them in the rooms
    - headphone (1/4" stereo) jacks
    - holes in the wall for snakes to pass through? If so, how many?
    - intercom?
2.) Wall Construction Sound Absorption Techniques
    - insulation (what kind and where to install)
    - use of resilient channel (rc) versus plain firring strips
    - what kind of material should be used for damping rc or firring strips, and also the wall boards & studs
3.) Wall Treatments once room is built (what have you used/ prefer)
    - for a room our size (10' x 20' live room), what kind of sound foams should we use? For each kind, where do we place them?
    - bass traps (only corners?)
    - absorption
    - reflection
    - diffusion

Thanks in advance for the advice. Of course when we are done any JCF member that wants to record can get a big discount!

As much as i like this forum here but if i were you i wouldn't ask those questions here. There are better forums out there for those questions, especially the questions concerning acoustic treatment.

    http://www.recording.org/index.php

Recording.org has a nice acoustic section on their board.

    http://johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/index.php

John Sayers Studio Design forum is also a top site for those questions.

Just make sure that you use the search function in those forums as those general questions get posted their quite often.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice, I haven't heard of those other forums. I will check them out. It seems like there are a ton of knowledgeable people here, so I thought one of the JCFers may have gone through this process before. Thanks again.
