Looks killer man, I had a home-made 410 back in the eighties.
I still keep practicing though.... Mostly because I hate my neighbors.-MakeAJazzNoiseHere

Re: Finally got started on my cabinet.

Well, here it is almost done. I have a few things left to do:

1. Putty the screw holes at the corners and sand.

2. Cut the speaker grille to size, and paint it black. I'm having the place where I bought it put a 12 degree bend in the middle to match the angle of the speaker baffles. I'll have to take out the baffles to install the grille.

3. Wire up the speakers. 10 minutes at most. I am wiring all 4 speakers in series, because I'll be using this cab with my new Randall which needs 4 or 8 ohms, and with 4 - 16 ohm speakers, I can't think of any way to wire them to 8 ohms, so 4 it is.

4. Tolex.

5. Corner protectors.

Almost there!!

I have already tried the cab out using the speaker wires out of my Peavey cab. They just push on, so it was easy enough to borrow them for a quick test run. I hadn't got the back panel trimmed propwerly, so I just sat the panel off the Peavey loosely in the back, and even this way, I am pleased to announce, it sounds AWESOME!!!

I'm very impressed with the Madison speakers. I had heard rumours that they were muddy sounding, but that is simply not true at all. They have a great range, and are very versatile. I adjusted my amp from a scooped thrash sound, to a midrangey AC/DC sound, to just clean, and they pull everything off just great.

Sound clips in a couple of days, I promise.

That looks great Zeegs! But don't let anyone tell you that screws and glue are better than dovetails and glue.....

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thanks Dave.

The screws & glue might not be better, but they sure make for a solid cabinet.

If I build another one, I'll borrow a dovetail jig, and see how that works out.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Wow, that was quite the brain fart. If I wired 4 - 16 ohm speakers in series, I would end up with 64 ohms!!! What I meant to say was that I am wiring them in parallel.

I hate wiring speakers, it took me a week to get them wired up right in my cab. Great looking cab so far. I really want to make one but I know I would screw it up.

that's a great looking cab!!
quite interessting to see someone do it on his own, never thought about doing so myself...

I actually like it the way it is right now.
looks very unique, and somehow cool in this natural look.

why put tolex on it?

would be great for home use I guess, since it would fit at least my furniture (?) quite well...

be sure to keep us updated about the progress!!

Yeah I agree it looks kinda cool this way, but I have 4 yards of really cool purple lizardskin tolex that needs a home.

Well, I still don't have any clips. The wife has had me busy with other things, so I haven't gotten around to finishing the cab yet. It should be done by monday though. The Tolex should be going on tonight, and then it's just the metal grille that's left.

Re: Finally got started on my cabinet.

LOL, looks like I'm the only one replying to my own thread. Oh well, here's an update anyway.

I finished the tolex on the cabinet. Now I'm just waiting for the metal grill so I can put it all back together.

However, I ran across a small snag when tearing the black carpet off my Randall head. When I recieved the head, it had no rubber feet on it, and just sat flat on the cabinet. So I ordered some feet off ebay, but in the meantime, I used some of the smaller white ones from the local hardware store. Well, with the feet on, I noticed that the bottom of the head was sagging right where the chassis ends. It appears that at some time in its life, the head has been dropped rather violently, and the cheap, shitty particle board cabinet it is in has broken. Shame on Randall for using particle board for a head that cost close to $800 (and that was 15-20 years ago). What, is plywood too fancy for them?

Anyway, what this boils down to, is that I have to build a new box for the head. Probably a good thing, because then I don't have to worry about getting that ugly black carpet off it.

I started on the box last night, and it's almost done already. This time I used a nice piece of pine I had laying around, and instead of screwing it from the ends, I used cleats on the inside corners screwed and glued. It's very solid, and won't take long to finish.

When this is finished, it will be virtually impossible to tell that it is even a Randall.

Not alone Zeeg, CZ to the Rescue! Glad to hear you are close to finish your cab, Please take some detailed pic of the finishing when done.
I Still have to find time (and founds )to finish the cosmetics on my homemade SLO (remember?). At the moment it´s black tolex w/white font panel(with labels & black chicken knobs), no rear panel(nor labels), no front/back grille(SLO style should be). I own a 5150 slant sheffield cab (black metal grille).
I was thinking it would be a nice color combination:
CAB: red tolex, black metal gille & white painted speaker-mounting front angled wood (white takes black grille & speakers alive)
Head: matching style
Can U Imagine the idea? What you think?
