Talk box

Anyone remember talk boxes?
Some guy told me that primitive talk boxes were like this: you covered the amp with something like funnel and then put the rubber tube in your mouth.
He says Foo Fighters used some.

How did it work? Any pictures?

P.S.: I know new talk box works, so I need info on primitive ones.

You're correct. They used a small amp and covered the speaker with something that just had a hole for the tube/pipe. Obviously, that was a bit impractical, hence the modern designs. I guess that the old way of doing it sounds best, but then there's the cost of another amp and the 'comfort' of hauling it everywhere.

I made one 12 or so years ago using a box my uncle made me out of sheet metal. It would screw closed and it had a hole for the surgical tubing. I experimented with different speakers and ended up using this really expensive horn driver. In the end it cost me more than a Heil, but I think it sounded better. It wasn't as high pitched. The low end would rattle my teeth.
