• Line 6 Question

I just sold my Triple Rectifier a week ago due to some pressing financial obligations. It was worth more than I had to pay out and I'm going through a hefty withdrawl !! For some background, I considered that amp my "holy grail". The only think even remotely disappointing was the clean channel but that was easily covered up by a little chorous/reverb. Channel 2 & 3 were incredible - absolutely the sound I'm about.

That brings me to the Line 6 thingy. I don't have a lot of knowledge of their products. I used to own a Johnson Milennium 250 head and the only reasons I got rid of it were being able to afford the Mesa and could never get an equal volume between the clean & dirty channels (which drove many a sound guy mad !). So, I'm kinda looking that direction at least for the time being. Don't think any tube amp in my price range would compare to what I had.

Does anyone have any opinions on the Spider II Head ? To me it doesn't look like it's compatible with any of the foot controllers - is that a correct assumption ? Basically I'm looking to get out of this from somewhere between $400-$600. Would like the amp to be controllable with a large floor board. I know the Vetta is exactly what I'm describing but I don't have that kind of coin - even for the used ones. Is there anything else out there I should be considering ?

Thanks in advance - sorry if I was a little hard to follow in the post...I should have gone to bed about 4 hours ago

BTW - I'm open to stuff other than Line 6 - they seem like a good starting point, though.

With the Spider 2 head you can use the FBV2, FBV4 or the FBV shortboard.

Look at the 1st gen Flextone HD and the Flextone II HD. I have 2 of the 1st gen Flextone HD's. They kill. Live, practice, bedroom, recording studio. 300 watts (150 per side true stereo). They sound killer whether direct with no cabs, a 1 x 12 and all the way up to powering 4 x 4 x 12 cabinets in true stereo with no problem. With the master volume on 4 and the channel volume on 7 I get enough volume to compete with a Dual or Triple Recto at a typical live and loud heavy metal band setting with no problem. I am a big fan of Line 6 and modeling amps so my opinion is a bit jaded.

I've got one of the newer Flextone III Plus's and it is an amazing amp. It is a 112 combo but can drive external cabinets. Right now I've got it hooked up to my 5150 cab. That adds quite a bit of bass response to the tone. I was hesitant at first, but Line 6 does make some really good stuff.

As far as the Spider II, I was thinking about getting the 2x12, but once I played the Flextone there was no comparison.

I have a Flex III plus, POD XT and a Vetta II. Just can't wrong with line6 stuff.

I just got the flex III plus for smaller gigs. This little amps just plain rocks. Add a cab to it and it gets louder and sounds even better. I looked at the spider stuff and it was ok but the Flex III is a far better amp for just a little more money.

I have the HD2 Head..I was Marshall user all along(over 20 years). It's gone now.The Line 6 sounds great every time we play. The JCM900 was different about every time.I have the large floorboard with volume and wah.The wah isn't that great though.I use my cry baby instead.Once you get familiar with the programming the Line 6 it's pretty easy to use.I found a new unopened one on the eBay for $450.The floorboard was $180.So that's about right in your range.Good luck...Cort

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">DON'T BOTHER!! The Duoverb sounds ok (and JUST ok - although I do think it sounds the most "organic" of the Line 6 amps), but it's VERY noisy, and IMHO, the models don't really sound much like the comparable models on the Flextone series. No effects either. Go with the Flextone, or the Vetta. The Flextone HD is great, and (although I just sold it - needed $$$) I loved my Flextone III XL. I understand that the EPROM has been upgraded and that they fixed the issue with the Marshalls sounding so shitty. If you get one that has the older EPROM, I have heard you can download the new version.

I also have a Flexxtone III XL Chris, I downloaded the update from Line6's web site, took about 15 minutes for the upgrade to complete.

Not to start a pissing match but the Duoverb uses the same amp algorithms as the vetta. It flopped because it was way to much money for its limited number of amp models and no efx. If you use just a few models and don't care about efx being built in the Duo is a great deal at the close-out price. You get two amps at once which I use a lot on the Vetta and adds much flexibility.

I recently shopped both (Spider II and Flextone III), in the end I got a FlexIII. IMHO, you will be disspointed with the Spider II - especially coming to replace your Mesa.

I love the new firmware on the III so far, I really need to spend more time with it to give a full on review. But so far I don't regret selling my 800 (especially after the firmware upgrade to fix the Marshalls).
