I suppose anyone doing recording is probably using a compressor/limiter.

What about for playing live? Do you use compression?

I use a compressor before and after my pre-amp. Slight compression before, and mostly just as a noise gate after.

For distorted guitars - no. Distortion is basically compressing the signal - i.e. it is reducing the dynamic range of the original signal. For clean guitars a little compression helps to even things out.
