• VHT/Peavey/ENGL power amps. . .

Ok, ive been building a rack for the past 6 months, and i have one piece left to get, the POWER AMP. I really wanted the ENGL 930/60, but the more time that goes by, the more i am beginning to realize that its not as easy as i thought it was to acquire. so lately i have been looking at the VHT 2/50/2, because they have a good reputation, and are good pices of equipment. I have also been looking at the Peavy classic 50-50, but not as a final amp, just as something to keep me satisfied for now. So, what it really comes down to is the VHT, or the ENGL. and as far as prices are concerned, VHT is cheaper. Im just looking for a good power amp, with good power, and good tone.

I dont want Mesa Boogie's.

I think VHT have the best poweramps on the market. I would go VHT. I have a Mesa though cause 20 watts is enough for me. Mesa is 2nd best but for my needs its tops. I have an Engl pre and had a powerball so I'm biased to Engl I like their tone but never heard their poweramps. Go VHT.

It's official, im going with a VHT 2/50/2, i read all the reviews on Harmony central. And so far, its "the best power amp in the world."

Side note - Anyone looking to get rid of theirs?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The best power amp in the world is not the 2/50/2. but the VHT 2150 without a doubt. I still heard nothing that can come close to the 2150.
But it's HEAVY!! about 25-30 kgs I would guess. So if you have to lug your own case around, the best way is to put in a separate case.

Doesn`t VHT also make a 2/90/2? What is that one all about? Good choice on the VHT, I love my VHT Pittbull CLX-100 Jack.

Jack yeah they make a 2/90/2 but I am in agreement with the 2150 being the best. It is the KT88 tubes no doubt that make it the best

Re: VHT/Peavey/ENGL power amps. . .

I had a Peavey 50/50 (el 84's) for 10 years. It was a dependable, rugged amp. Then I needed to upgrade and go for more wattage. I checked out the Mesa 2Ninety (6l6's) and it was nice but not as badass as the VHT 2902 (kt-88's) I bought.

My VHT 2902 makes me feel like I've was sleeping with an ugly chick (Peavey) for years and didn't know any better.
Seriously.. VHT is the bomb. May take you a while to get your's but the wait is worth it. When I had to choose between 2502 and the 2902, I went with the extra wattage. The price difference wasn't worth considering.

It's not just the tubes. A 2/90/2 is also no match for the mighty 2150. The trannies also have a huge part in the awesome sound of the 2150!!

Re: VHT/Peavey/ENGL power amps. . .

hey,
I've also been looking for a poweramp.
I always had thought buying the engl 930/60.
But I came back from that idea. Not that I think it's a bad amp, I dig Engl stuff a lot, but some reviews made me reconsider, maybe it's not always that reliable. Then again, I had heard the VHT 2150 was the best, but expensive, and perhaps too much power for my needs.
I mainly play metal but my rig should suit for playing jazzy and other clean stuff too.
That's why I'm looking for a 2/50/2. The 2/90/2 might be too much power also and since it has the KT88 tubes, it isn't that suitable for clean stuff I think. But hey, if I have enough money I'd buy one of those too. But right now I need an all-round amp.

any other advice? I use an Engl 530 pre-amp

KT88 are good clean tubes IMO.... Very flat complex sound

I love my 2150. With all the headroom you get from the 2150, you can get clean sounds LOUD.

Your tubes will last longer at lower volumes actually. The harder you push the tubes at volume the shorter their life span. And for the record the rare VHT 2100 Classic is the best power amp ever produced.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yes, I know, but there's a switch or so you can make it work on 60 W, A/B class or so?
Or is it the same like dialing in low volumes?
