• What is a good mic to complement an SM 57?

Used for micing cabs, I normally use the SM57 right next to the amp, but I need something to capture the "meat" and deap bassy sounds.

Can someone make a suggestion? Preferably below 200 bucks.

Sennheiser MD-421. This is the best answer you're gonna get! Many (many!) studios have used and uses this mic and it is very good for a lot of instruments. It has a very large, high quality diaphragm and therefore can work without distortion with very high sound pressure, coming from close mic'ing brass horns, drums, guitars etc. As for all quality mics, it benefits from a good quality mic preamp. The frequency curve of the mic is not 100% linear (most aren't) but it reproduces a very open, pleasant sound with a clean, deep low end.

Buy a used one on eBay. Don't get alarmed by an 1980'ies made one. They are good.

Agreed on the MD-421. The 421 will pickup the low-lows and higher-highs that the 57 leaves out. The 421 by itself is a little light in the midrange, but the two together work very well. Used you should be able to get one off ebay under $200.

Oh yeah, the 604 clip-on is also a fine mic.
