Re: need help getting thicker tone
I have a Marshall Mono block ...like yours but with 5881s in it ...a JMP-1 (Marshall preamp) and a JFX-1 (Marshal effects unit)...it needed a thicker tone
I tried every stupid graphic EQ under the sun and they all sucked ass.
I put a BBE 422a in the loop...(It must be a 422a)!!!!!!!!!
That's all I needed ....
If that don't work try shoving some Enzyte in your loop.. "Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"

Re: need help getting thicker tone
Man I had an SGX2000 and I couldn't get it out of my studio fast enough.... I found nothing in that Pre that I liked... I would replace it IMO to get a better tone... But then again to each his ownI keep the bible in a pool of blood
So that none of its lies can affect me

Re: need help getting thicker tone
I'd take a JMP-1 over an ADA MP-1 anyday ....but that's just me ..."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"

Re: need help getting thicker tone
I would go with the MP-1 as well. I used to have the Marshall Mono block, and the MP-1 had huge balls. Run a Yamaha SPX90 for your effects and enjoy. The JMP-1 is alright for a backup unit (horns666) 1990 Jackson Professional

Re: need help getting thicker tone
for thicker sound you might be better served by a lower wattage head (or an attenuator, or some good quality earplugs and a general lack of concern for your eardrums/neighbors/police )
Instead of pre-amp tube overdrive, you want power tube overdrive for thickness, that's pretty hard to get with a 100 watt head at a reasonable volume.
this is all just IMO, I like extreme volume just as much as the next guy

Re: need help getting thicker tone
I don't know I tweaked and milked the unit (JMP-1) and it's doing me just fine ....pinch squeals galore and major edge and chunk ....very heavy , aggresive tone and a definite "Marshall" tone".....they guys like it and they hear my Uber all the time..
I got this thing sounding like Drover on steroids ....not kiddin' guys..my Uber and John's Rigs don't get the unreal harmonics this damn thing does ...it's very "lively" sounding ....I love it!
The BBE does help for some "girth" it does lack ....so does it's player but I have plenty of "girth" on my own .....
I'll never part with this thing... "Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"

Re: need help getting thicker tone
If the Genetix has a Speaker Sim, set it up to boost your low-mids. If the SGX has good effects (I tried one, the preamp section sucked so I didn't dig into it further), set a Chorus for a 30Msec Delay, Chorus Volume about 6 or 7, and zero Sweep and Rate.
Actually I'd drop the MXR and the SGX and just use the GNX. Too much in the chain can suck your tone. Maybe keep the MXR as a mid boost for leads, but that's it.
You could also just plug straight into the Marshall to see how it sounds by itself and what it's doing to your tone, then use the MXR to repair the damage it does to the GNX sounds you like.
