• Buying a powerball

Hi all, new to the board, first post actually and looking forward to B.S.ing with other Jackson players and metalers.
I'm going to sell my 5150 2x12 and buy and Engl Powerball and would like all the input anyone has on this amp as far as how you like it and the tones you can get out of it. I know it's very versatile but I would imagine the clips don't do this amp justice so any input would be great. I play a Jackson Rhoades PS3T (one of the old performers) with EMG 85 in the bridge and 81 in the neck. Ocassionally I'll use a Metal Zone and an RP300 for different FX.

Here's the tone I'm really shooting for:

This guy uses a Rocktron Voodu Valve with some sort of EQ. I'm not a fan of racks and modeling gear. I just want an amp I can plug straight into and rock out.

I'm also into the new melodic metal, i.e. Shadows Fall, Beyond the Embrace, Nightrage, All that Remains and other death metal, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation and Carcass. I also enjoy the 80's thrash tone, The Master of Puppets tone and EVH tone.

You guys think the Powerball will put me where I wanna be at? I've received an E-Mail from DerekB at Rocksolidamps.com and he sais I should be happy with the Powerball. What does everyone else think? TIA!

The instant plug and play was very good like I said though I will get back with a better review

Search the Amp section for "Powerball" among the results should be my review. It's pretty in-depth and will give you some idea of what it's capable of.

Ya know, now that I think about it, all I play is metal. I don't need a four channel amp. I'm going to go with the Fireball instead, besides, more research has led me to hear it is more brutal than the Powerball. I don't know, my 5150 just sounds fizzy and harsh to me and needs to be cranked too loud to get great tone.

They are both great amps. You should try a Fireball if you think a 5150 sounds harsh a fizzy. You might not like it.

From what I've read and the clips I've heard, I couldn't find anything negative about it. It's kind of hard to try an ENGL before you buy. If I don't like it though I'll end up selling it for something else I'm sure. Maybe it's the 5150 2x12 speakers I had issues with?

I've got a fireball and it is a very serious kick ass metal amp. You will not be disappointed as it gets a great tone for metal. I play it thru a genz benz 2-12 and the axes are loaded with 81 85. Great at bedroom volume and great at high volume.
