• Peavey 5150 and it's Humming...

Hey guys. I have a 5150 and it is producing a lot of hum. I have a Boss NS-2 set-up on max. and it still produces hum. What could be wrong? This is driving me crazy.

Is it hum or hiss? Hiss is normal for the 5150 especially with the lead channel and the gain set high. Hum could be many things. You should try some different tubes first.

Does the amp hum the same in every room? If not than it's an environmental issue with where the amp is setup, if so, then it's something specific to your hardware.

Does it hum the same with different guitars? What about different cords (both speaker and guitar)?

Try changing these things our before replacing your tubes. You can always borrow a guitar and cables from a friend to try and issolate the problem if you only own one guitar and one cable...

If it is the amp, new tubes will probably run about $100, and may or may not fix the problem.

      Good luck.

Well it happens with all the guitars and cables I've tried so far. I bought new tubes about 2 months ago becouse of the humming. It hasn't done anything yet.

What do you have surrounding your amp? (lights, equipment,etc...) If you have dimmers, or lights around, this can create the hum.

Well... The amp is connected to a multi switch that has the computer connected. I play in my room. The only thing close enough to the amp is my pc and my T.V. I don't know if this has real effect on it though. I also played in my friends house and the same hum happens.

The picture tube in your TV and your computer are the cause. Your friend probably has a ground issue too.

I put the NS-2 and my EQ through the FX Loop and now I'm getting less feedback. I'm going to try the 5150 in an empty room to see if it still makes feedback. I'll let you guys know. Thanks for the replies.

Also, try turning the gain down a bit. Once you get past a certain point more gain just add hiss and feedback. (I know turning the gain down is not very METAL, but sometimes you gotta do it )

I'd say its definitely the fact that you have it plugged into the same powerboard as your computer. Cause i get hissing and buzzing of all sorts too but it usually happens when my comp is plugged in and running (i connect my stuff the same way as you do as my gear is in my room also). Arent tube amps generally susceptible to this sort of thing?

Yeah, The tubes pick up all sorts of frequencies. It doesn't help that there is a unshielded transformer near by either.

The second 5150 i picked up about 7 months ago had a really bad hum. I opened it up, and some of the cap's were leaking really bad. It might be time to check your caps.
