hell, even loomis played them, so they gotta be good ^^
so maybe i'll take a look at different pu's....maybe a tonezone or a evolution....damn, i wish dimarzio would make a 7string x2n, that would rock.

Try a 7 string Duncan Invader. That ought to be hot enough for anybody.

but the invader sounds kind of muddy to me. a bud of mine owns an ibanez 6string with a invader in the bridge and well.....those ibanez babes are quite bright sounding guitars, but the guitar sounds muddy as hell....at least imo...he loves it....but he's playing punk rock....go figure..
i dont want to try those out for 7string...i dont want my low b to sound like a tuba, you know

what about the emg 707? those are the 7string versions of the 85, right? do you think they sound to dark for a 7string guitar -> muddy? (btw: i've got a bright amps, so it will handle a darker sounding pickup....just not invader-dark). those 7string emgs are larger than your basic passive 7string pu, arent they? maybe i should check if they'd fit into my guitar

Re: getting a huge death metal sound a la CC

That sound comes from the Mesa Triple Rectifier set on the Red Channel/ Silicon Diode mode, EMG707 (7-string) EMG81 (6-string) and a Boss Metal Zone set for EQ only (distortion is almost off on the pedal, EQ's are all at about 10 o'clock, level 3/4th's of full) going into the amp. Speaker cabs are the new Crate straight 4x12's with Celestion Vintage 30's. You really need the 6L6 tubes to get that loose thick distortion of CC. Tune down to B-Flat also of course.

Jack's sound does come from the Digitech, but Pat's rig is the real nasty sound you're wanting to get. Jacks rig is surprisingly clean sounding (not all that much distortion) in person.

yeah, maybe, but i'm sure as hell not going to spend ~3700 for a halfstack...alright...maybe for a diezel...but certainly not for a mesa rectifier

i already tried a mt2 in front of my amp (as a booster, not as a distortion unit) and i thought it kills my dynamics. if i use a tubescreamer to boost the input i'm still able to get a clean sound if i turn the volume pot down - and thats with the 5th gain stage active. with the mt2 i wasnt even able to get a clean sound when using only the first 4 gain stages (=regular rhythm channel)...

btw. i'm already using 6l6 tubes

Re: getting a huge death metal sound a la CC

I don't blame you for not wanting to spend that much for a Mesa- you can get them here for $800(head) on Ebay. I was just telling you what Pat uses to get that sound. Rob Barrett and Phil (Malevolent) use almost the same setup (Dual Rec. instead of Triple)

Rob and Jack used Crate amps with a M.Zone back in the Bleeding days. The Parametric E.Q. on the Metal Zone with EMG's can almost get you that Death-Metal sound with any amp, and has always been a sound staple around here in Florida Death-Metal. Everyone I know down here uses a Zone and EMG's before their amp except Trey. In fact, almost anything recorded at Morrisound (Tampa) back then (Sepultura, Monstrosity, etc.) is big time Metal Zone/EMG81.

Tom Warrior (Celtic Frost) used the Tube Screamer setup in front of Marshalls back in the day to get his killer sound (he also turned the tone knob on his Ibanez all the way off for that 'below the grave' type sound)

Good luck,
Lurch.

Re: getting a huge death metal sound a la CC

wow...i didnt know that so many pros use the mt2....cant quite believe it actually. i tried it in front of my amp, with the amp set clean, dirty, crunch, as a distortion unit, as a booster, .... never liked it
i always found it to be to harsh in the highend, and once i turned the highs down on the mt2 and raised them at the amp it was muddy sounding... maybe you can give me some advice how to set it right? would be cool...

the bleeding..i love the way that album sounds. guess i'll buy some emgs ^^

yeah, its really sad that mesas are that expensive over here...i already thought of buying one in the us and ship it over to europe...i guess even after paying taxes and shipping etc ill still save some money ^^

I understand that. I think the Distortion is about as hot as you want to get, anyway. For that crazy totally distorted DM sound, EMG's probably the way to go, anyway...

You'll have to route your guitar - the 707 is a much bigger case. I like the 707, and it doesn't really sound like an 85 - it sounds like a combo of the 81 and 85, to me, anyway. They also make a 707-81 that's a 7 string 81.

damn....well, then i'll stick with passive pups. i dont want to route my guitar just to find out that i dont like those emgs

what about the dimarzio blaze custom? the regular blaze is said to be very similar to a steves special (my other guitar has one in the bridge position....don't like it that much. too harsh sounding to my ears), but the custom is basically a hotter version with more mids than the basic blaze afaik. any opinions?

I can't say I'm a big fan of ANY of the DiMarzio 7 string pickups, but the Blaze Custom is probably the best of the bunch - excluding the custom ones in the EBMM Petrucci, anyway.

Re: getting a huge death metal sound a la CC

There's no passive pickup out there that will get you that tight distortion like an EMG81. The EMG707 is close (I also think they sound like a mix of an 81 and an 85) and well worth the modification, but even Pat has gone back to using a 6-string with an EMG81 tuned down to B-Flat just to get the original 81 sound.

The old 81's without the quick disconnect wiring are the best- a few people have told me they sound better, and were made in a different factory. (I can't tell the difference though- you'd really have to be a die-hard EMG user to tell)

My Beast 7-string used to have Blaze Customs and they weren't even close to a 707. The artificial harmonics scream out so easy with EMG's- that's probably why Zakk Wylde uses them.

I sent you an email.

Later,
Lurch.

by the way: how close can one come to that sound with a triple XXX? i'm asking because those thingys frequently pop up at ebay for arount 900€ or so. of course they dont sound exactly like the rectifiers, but i wonder how close they come to this kind of sound?

I'm not sure, I've never tried/heard a XXX. From the description (3 12ax7's and 4 6L6's) it should get close, but I think that you'd be better off with a Mesa from Ebay. All of the Nu-Metal punks are starting to dump them cheap now since most of them are going nowhere fast. hehe.

Look for the old 2 channel version- they are the best.

I've heard amps that sound really cool (and maybe even better than the Mesa) when you play in your room by yourself, but in a full band situation the Mesa crushes them.

Fragle, why don`t you try A Framus Cobra? I think I saw it used a few times on the German e-bay. I have one and I really think that you`d be REALLY satisfied with the amp.

I've also heard great things about the Cobra- actually that it is a Deizel clone for less money which is great! Germany is the land of great tube amps- try them all. Deizel VH4, Bogner Ubershall, VHT Pittbull Ultra Lead, and Framus Cobra are the ones suitable for high gain players and I've heard raves about.

The ones that I've heard disappointing things about however are the Deizel Herbert, Engle Savage, and Bogner Shiva- not enough gain is what I'm hearing. Not to offend users of these amps- I've just heard it from some reputable death-metal pros who tour and rent these in Europe. They always end up back with Mesa's.
