Re: getting a huge death metal sound a la CC

Avoid using the MT-2 + other amp. I've seen three metal bands over the past year who were using this setup and the tone was terrible live. One was a brutal death metal band (think Hate Eternal but a bit slower) and the tone was so muddy you couldn't even discern most of the riffs that he was playing. Another band used one live and I've never heard worse feedback in my entire life. The third was reasonable but a solid Mesa or Peavey or even a Marshall would've done him better, the tone had absolutely no cutting power. Yes the MT-2 is great for certain situations but why not grab an amp that gets the job done right from the start?

I'm not sure, I've never tried/heard a XXX. From the description (3 12ax7's and 4 6L6's) it should get close, but I think that you'd be better off with a Mesa from Ebay. All of the Nu-Metal punks are starting to dump them cheap now since most of them are going nowhere fast. hehe.

Look for the old 2 channel version- they are the best.

I've heard amps that sound really cool (and maybe even better than the Mesa) when you play in your room by yourself, but in a full band situation the Mesa crushes them.

Hm... Triple XXX sounds pretty good by my ear and gets some pretty heavy duty sounding death metal tones without much tweaking. Even though the Triple XXX is supposed to be a Peavey Rectifier copy (I mean, just look at the cover with the trucker ladies, trying to copy the diamond plate on the Mesa Recs) I think that they're two very different amps. To me the Triple XXX sounds like a somewhat suped up 5150 with a cleaner Clean channel and a lead channel (the ultra channel). If there ever was an amp with too much gain I think this is it. Mesa does kill the Triple XXX with versitility, the Triple XXX is pretty much only useable in a metal band and the Mesa has a lot of extra features. But if you're looking to pay about half the price (or even less) of a Mesa Rec then its a good solution. I traded in my crappy Flextone 1x12 amp and a Korean Jackson for my Triple XXX and it was a great purchase. It came down to either a Dual Rec for well over $1000 or a Triple XXX for half the price.

I guess the whole point of this post is to just say that they shouldn't really be compared since they're not really that similar. I like them both but for very different reasons.

As an unrelated sidenote- The more I read Mesa threads the more I want to sell my somewhat customized '85 Mark III Coliseum Series w/Simul Class, but I'm not sure if anyone would want to buy it.

whoa , i read your site Lurch (pretty cool site btw ;-) ) and i'm also wondering that that many good dm players use mt-2 and get a decent ( okay , i'm not really into midscoop but they sound okay on the cd's ) sound ... could you send me your settings for the mt2 ( my bandmate has it , it's a TOTAL PAIN IN THE ASS to set it up decent - he plays it through a non tube amp :S)

on the emg site there's a pickup 81-7 or sth like that for 127 bucks , it says it's the 81 for 7 string , not like 707

Wow, good spot! That's the first I've heard of the new EMG81-7. I investigated it and it looks like ESP has them in all their new model 7-string guitars. I'm going to get one for sure, and tell Pat right away about them. Thanks for the info dude!

Do you have an email address to send the MT-2 info to?

Thanks,
Paul.

Bro's... listen to Paul (Lurchhammer)!! He sent me settings for the Dual Rectifier Tremoverb head using an MT-2 Metal Zone and all I can tell you is HOLY $HIT. His settings are not what you would expect and the tone is total death metal. I don't play death metal but I certainly know how to nail the tone thanks to him. The tone literally blasts right through your body. He even sent me setting when using 2 MT-2's!! I am not brave enough to try them. Cleveland Metal also has great settings.

Thanks man, but I have to give credit where credit is due- those settings come from Rob Barrett himself. Huge brutal sound, and the guarantee that it WORKS live! Tested and tuned for countless shows and many tours over the years.

So dude- have you thought about the amp/guitar trade anymore? I miss that amp.

Lurch.

I've also heard great things about the Cobra- actually that it is a Deizel clone for less money which is great! Germany is the land of great tube amps- try them all. Deizel VH4, Bogner Ubershall, VHT Pittbull Ultra Lead, and Framus Cobra are the ones suitable for high gain players and I've heard raves about.

The ones that I've heard disappointing things about however are the Deizel Herbert, Engle Savage, and Bogner Shiva- not enough gain is what I'm hearing. Not to offend users of these amps- I've just heard it from some reputable death-metal pros who tour and rent these in Europe. They always end up back with Mesa's.

Not to start a fire or anything in this thread but I am a user of an Engl Savage and if you want more gain, all you have to do is turn the damn thing up! I saw Dimmu Borgir the other night here in Las Vegas and I believe Silenoz was playing through a Powerball but Galdur was for sure playing a Savage because the tone was straight out of my music room!

Interesting.. Having read Jgcable's and your comments I was wondering if you have any recordings of the MT-2 at work (not studio recordings, home done ones with little to no mixing on 'em). I'm interested in hearing the tones.

Hey Lurchhammer i am really interested in those settings. I own a Dual Rectifier and i am still not really satisfied with my sound. Would be cool if you can share the infos on the MT-2. My Email address is: Infernal_Death(at)gmx.de

I mentioned it in my post, too, I just got the friggin' name wrong. We played with Lacuna Coil a couple of months ago and they had the LTD SC-607B's with these in them, and they sounded pretty much like a regular 6 string 81, to me. (Obviously, their amps have something to do with their tone...)

I just saw Cannibal Corpse on the TWS tour and Pat was using his triple rectifier with the BC Rich V's and EMG's. I think that's all he uses and his live tone was much different than the album, much like the older CC. That heavier tone that they're getting has to be a result of the post recording EQ.

SINCE YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT THE METAL ZONE, look what I just found and I'm gonna get this done. It got killer reviews on HC. It's the Robert Keeley MT2 Twilight Zone. Might be right up your alley from what you disliked about the Metal Zone. You have the same feelings I do about it.

I have one that I don't use, do you want to buy it? $95 shipped in perfect condition. email me at [email protected]

It does sound great with that sonic maximizer built in, but I'm using a Line6 now, so I don't use it anymore. It does have a less sterile sound for sure- kinda' 'tubish' you could say.

Pat uses the Metal Zone setup also. He used to use the Marshall Jackhammer instead, but they had noise issues.
