Re: getting a huge death metal sound a la CC
Avoid using the MT-2 + other amp. I've seen three metal bands over the past year who were using this setup and the tone was terrible live. One was a brutal death metal band (think Hate Eternal but a bit slower) and the tone was so muddy you couldn't even discern most of the riffs that he was playing. Another band used one live and I've never heard worse feedback in my entire life. The third was reasonable but a solid Mesa or Peavey or even a Marshall would've done him better, the tone had absolutely no cutting power. Yes the MT-2 is great for certain situations but why not grab an amp that gets the job done right from the start?

I'm not sure, I've never tried/heard a XXX. From the description (3 12ax7's and 4 6L6's) it should get close, but I think that you'd be better off with a Mesa from Ebay. All of the Nu-Metal punks are starting to dump them cheap now since most of them are going nowhere fast. hehe.
Look for the old 2 channel version- they are the best.
I've heard amps that sound really cool (and maybe even better than the Mesa) when you play in your room by yourself, but in a full band situation the Mesa crushes them.

Hm... Triple XXX sounds pretty good by my ear and gets some pretty heavy duty sounding death metal tones without much tweaking. Even though the Triple XXX is supposed to be a Peavey Rectifier copy (I mean, just look at the cover with the trucker ladies, trying to copy the diamond plate on the Mesa Recs) I think that they're two very different amps. To me the Triple XXX sounds like a somewhat suped up 5150 with a cleaner Clean channel and a lead channel (the ultra channel). If there ever was an amp with too much gain I think this is it. Mesa does kill the Triple XXX with versitility, the Triple XXX is pretty much only useable in a metal band and the Mesa has a lot of extra features. But if you're looking to pay about half the price (or even less) of a Mesa Rec then its a good solution. I traded in my crappy Flextone 1x12 amp and a Korean Jackson for my Triple XXX and it was a great purchase. It came down to either a Dual Rec for well over $1000 or a Triple XXX for half the price.
I guess the whole point of this post is to just say that they shouldn't really be compared since they're not really that similar. I like them both but for very different reasons.
As an unrelated sidenote- The more I read Mesa threads the more I want to sell my somewhat customized '85 Mark III Coliseum Series w/Simul Class, but I'm not sure if anyone would want to buy it.
