Re: Marshall jmp 1 preamp

That is some seriously funny ****.

Most of us have to loosen screws in our cabs to dial in a good "Fart" - but not JMP owners!

      Re: Marshall jmp 1 preamp

I think the JMP-1 / 9200 Monobloc w 5881's is the most "fartless" sound I've ever heard to date . There is a lot of definition and harmonics I can't pull of even with my Uber....or any other amp I've played including John's ..

I like to do a lot of pinch harmonis ...not as much as Zakk ...but a lot regardless....and this does it for me effortlessly....it's a very "lively" preamp"....with big time Marshall tone.

JMP-1 does have it's shortcomings (what amp doesn't) as far as over the top gain is concern but I'm used to the way it feels and the damn thing has been the most tonally consistant amp I ever owned for the last ten years.....which I LOVE !!!!

Why ...more time playing / learning / writing songs instead of hours of tweaking knobs ...

Now the only knob I have to tweak is the one that keeps me up all night lookin' at porn...

I still swear by it ...and the clips I heard Neddi posted a while back sounded damned good ....I believe that was a JMP-1 as well.

        Re: Marshall jmp 1 preamp

Umm Sorry, It mostly farted when you had the BBE maxed to the max, for maximum fartage... My bad. Operator error, hehe...

Now if fizzles and hishes with the great white noise. Yes, it has harmonics, many "solid state" things are great at that. It has consistancy, as many "solid state" things do as well.

But, it's basically a "solid state" rack mounted distortion box, with a pair of tubes glued in it for looks and good measure and ran at low voltage which doesn't do much (on a side note: surprising the Voodu Valve sounds as good as it does with a similar situation), that is MIDI controlled. That latter part is the best part of it all, MIDI controlled.

It isn't such a bad unit, but with a price of $699 us, that is a truly laughable concept. $299new and maybe $200used, and I'd likely spew about it everytime someone wanted a cheap decent preamp.

Soilid state ...OK cool whatever ...I like it .

I bought it ....it's been here since new and I still like it , unlike many tube amps I got rid of ....I'm sorry I like it.

                Re: Marshall jmp 1 preamp

I've used one for years in my rig, too, and love it... Perfect? nope... Good for me? yep... It's paired with a Rocktron Pirhana (another frequently maligned and largely misunderstood/misused preamp, imho) in my rack (both pushed through a G-Major & Mesa 20/20), and I love my tone, though I'll grant I'm not into the whole Death&FrazettaUberMetal666 scene - I just play "classic rock" (Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, Metallica) mixed with some newer stuff (Moist, Big Wreck, Matchbox 20, etc.) in a couple cover bands, and it sounds great for that. No fuzz, no farts, no crap... just good, solid, Marshall-esque tones...

I've heard people say it's not a "real tube preamp" before. I admit that I don't know anything about amp circuits and electronics, but I have swapped around tubes in the thing, and putting 12AT7s in the tube slots instead of 12AX7s sure changes the tone alot for something that uses the tubes just for decoration... Anyway, the number of pros out there pushing their "all-tube" amp with a solid-state pedal are legion (including Zakk and SRV and others) and noone's suggesting their tones are any the less for it, so I'm not too worried about the specs. It SOUNDS good, and thats what's important...

There's 100 memory slots for presets on the thing (numbered 00-99), and in stock mode it comes with 50 factory presets (which mostly suck) written through twice to fill up the 100 slots. All the memory slots can be written to, and I've filled up slots 00-62 with my own presets (but seldom use above 25 for the songs we play normally).

I like it. I'm still using it 5 years later. ymmv. my 2¢

                  Re: Marshall jmp 1 preamp

All I know is that I just blew a 12AX7 tube in the unit and the unilt basically shutdown....so it does depend heavily on that "tube" to actually operate ...

Yeah I'm sure it's basically a solid stae unit like a Marshall VS with a tube to compress and warm things up ....but the damn thing doesn't work without the tube ....this I know.

I play Death and Black metal and recorded all my Demo with it ....by the tape you would this thing has Gobs of gain...

This a a more "inspiring" sound to "write" and doodle new riffs than my Uber (for me anyways) and as far as the voodoo valve I used that preamp ...not bad ...a tad more gain than the JMP-1 but "Lifeless" compared to it....in my strong and convinced opinion.

See in my head my perfect tone is like a late Oliva / Early Eddie tone and the Uber is nothing like that at all...but with this I can pretty much nail the feel and the vibe to that stuff to a cross.

I played VS and Heard Glen from Eidolon with his ....I much rarther have this ...he probably would too if he heard it ..

                    Re: Marshall jmp 1 preamp

The 12ax7 in it is assuredly a part of the circuit, but runs at such a low voltage (like the voodu) that it is not even slightly putting the tube into the voltage area it needs to be. Yes, it imparts a flavor, I've changed tubes and noticed the diff. It develops its distortion through a diode network (look at the schematic) and IS a solid state distortion generator (like the voodu).

Like I said before, it's basically a rack distortion pedal with midi control. I hear a hish that it imparts to the signal that is disturbing to me. Even Bill admitted he hears it. You hear the note, and a hish laid right in along with it. I prefer a clean sounding tube circuit distortion that is working as intended. I've played a few of them and wasn't impressed with any, except for the first time I heard it. After owning it, I was dissapointed.

Mine was in the Marshall service shop 5 times, (as well as the matching EL34 100/100 power amp for cold solder joints) for an output channel problem and Marshall never really figured out how to fix it. When they work, they're worth $299/349 list at very best. I went to a tech 21 sansamp and was MUCH happier. When I went to tyhe voodu, i was even more happy. It actually sounded very Marshallesque.

The Voodu, is a slight bit more dead sounding, but if you take time to actually learn how to use it, is 10 times more versatile, as its internal EQ ability is tremendous. No comparision.

I used my JMP-1 for a door stop for a couple years before finally ebaying it.

I mean, it's an "ok" unit, but highly overpriced. An Engl preamp for a similar price absolutely smokes it as far as quality and tone goes. It relies on the Marshall name to sell it. If it were any other company, that preamp would have faded into the fog years ago. Just like its matching JFX-1 delay that even Marshall realized was a major expensive marketing and service oriented failure. Although it sounded warm and acceptable, it was tremendously overpriced and non-versatile. Another unit that was absolutely blown away by a $400 Intellifex and a TC Major would make it look like a toy.

As always, I wish I could say it was cool, I ABSOLUTELY loved Marshall at one time. Now, I realize they are just living on their name and selling substandard crap.

I take offense to a company that sells less than quality stuff to unsuspecting poor musicians who honestly believe in the good Marshall name and give them major dollars for the stuff.

I agree, the internal EQ variations on the Voodu are what makes that preamp click. I had to experiment with about 10 tubes before I found one I thought had the right characteristics as well. "2000 Suckulator" with buzz, fart and hum...that pic was great! Actually I found the JAN/GE 5751 was what I "think" that I liked best in the Voodu. What did you settle upon?

                          Re: Marshall jmp 1 preamp

Oo.. it's been awhile.. I think it was a RCA grey long plate 12AX7 from the 70's or a Valvo. Both were I was deciding on were testing pretty close to NOS or better and evenly on both sides, pretty sure it was a long plate tho. I have a handful of JAN 5751's from the 60's and they are nice tubes, I like them alot,- quiet with good tone and durable but I save them for the heads and I'm not sure if I even tried one in this to tell ya the truth as half the time I can't find what I'm looking for when I want to find it. I recall going thru a bunch of euro made tubes, Brimar, quite a few Valvo's & Siemans, Miniwatts.. I don't believe I had any spare Mullards then but some had flash.

To my ear, long plates seem to have a more musical response overall. I'll choose a tube that has tonal character I seek, even if it has a little more noise and not going microphonic.

The Voodu has a hush curcuit built in.. so I figured it wouldn't be as much of an issue. It seems to be basically an older style Chameleon with a tube curcuit.

Thank you John for your very informative opinion. I'm not the kind of person that forgets so easily that I gave up all of our gear including ...a brand new Recto , 5150s (five of them) and two mint 100wt Marshall JCM 800 lead series to get to this Marshall setup..

I'm also the kind of guy that once I have something and "don't" like it , I never look back.

John's JMP-1 was a used , farty , bad sounding unit the day he picked it up until the day he dumped it.....not mine.

all I know is that the JMP-1 as part of my Marshall gear smoked all the "tube" amps I had before.."distortion box" or not...

I still very much like it

I do know this , anyone who likes a 8100 Marshall VS's tone at low volumes would love this set up ....it it the same tone but at much higher volume levels..only with a lot more balls.

BTW ...None of my stuff ever went for service since bought new in early 1996..goin' on ten years...changed tubes in poweramp and preamp "once"....the preamp just recently.

and I play it everyday...sometimes all day....no complaints.

I'm with Bill, my JMP-1 and 9100 power amp never made a glitch and worked perfectly for the 5 years i had them. The JMP-1 needs a post placed Sonic Maximizer, though IMO.... badly.

My Marshall amp gear is history because it was crushed to death by my new Engl E530 and a cheap (but great) Peavey 50/50 Classic power amp.
