I don't think there's anything wrong with his amp at all. If he has the thing almost dimed, and he's using a pedal, but no noisegate, the feedback will be almost uncontrollable, depending on how he has the settings on the pedal.
My suggestion is to grab a noisegate like an old Boss NF-1. It's easy to use, and does the job.
