• lemme don my flame suit... :)

pete came down this past weekend for a harmony central ampfest get together. it was small, but a good time. here's what i learned:

engl powerball sounds good for death metal, and that's about it.

the bogner ecstacy is pretty versatile, but doesn't live up to its name.

there was a soldano that kicked ass (not an SLO, but i forget the name). best sounding non-modeling amp that was there, but a little noisy.

the bogner shiva (sp?) was a welcome change from what we had previously heard, and overall sounded pretty good if you're not into death metal.

orange makes a nice amp.

marshall dsl 2000s sound like ass.

pete's vetta I was far more versatile than all of the above, and is not only loud enough to cut through a band, but it sounds just about exactly like the amps its supposed to.

pete's low wattage hand made amp sounded really good for vintage tones.

there were a few other bogners that were okay; good for what they're supposed to do, but nothing that i'd sell my sister into prostitution for.

pete is a mutha on a guitar.

why would you don you flamesuit?...you're allowed to have your opinion as are we all...everyone's ear is shaped different and we hear amps differently...i play ampeg amps and am happy with my tone...have heard amps that cost 5-10 times as much that just didn't "do it" for me...be proud of your opinions dude...d.m.

I hear the Vetta's are awesome, but I just don't like the idea of a *software* amp. I'd love to try one, and then talk to people that have them, to see how they hold up.

I still have that JCM800 that Pete had, and I can't figure out why he let it go. New tubes and filter caps, and this thing has had a perm. spot beside my Mesa.

Thanks again Pete!

Was there any representation from the following:

Randall - I'm really interested to hear the new RM100 with the interchangeable modules.

Krank - never heard or seen one.

Diezel - heard good things.

Crate - yeah, yeah, I know.

Genz Benz - looks good, but never heard it.

Sully, I'd say your review would reflect the opinions of 90% of the JCF bruthahood. We all know that having b1tchin' gear and being able to do it justice are usually very different things. We all ALSO know Pete is a smokin' guitar player. Everything you said made perfect sense to me!

Was the Soldano a Hot Rod 50? Those are said to be awesome amps.

I'm getting dull and agreeable in my old age!

zeegler: nope.

lerx: no, i don't think it was a hot rod 50, but i'd recognize the name if i heard it again.

deneb: get a vetta and don't believe the negativity. it's cool as hell.

dm: thanks pal!

A live situation and a practice or jamming, (by yourself), situation are two different things....My XTC is by far the warmest most lush full sounding amp I own....I haven't tried it yet but I can definately see the amp not cutting through and having the overall in your face presence that most would probably like in a band situation.

Re: lemme don my flame suit...

I have played a Vetta, that sort of thing isnt my bag baby. I tried all the Mesa models and I hated them. The only one I even remotely liked was the soldano model. I just didnt think it had the mojo. I am just a tube amp type of guy. but hey, I gave it a try!! I just didnt like it. Its not for me, but LOTS of players love the Vetta's. Its all cool. Different strokes man!!! I am very into Mesa/Boogie amps.
Hey if we all liked the same thing, life would be boring.

I just cant dig the Vetta, but at least I gave it a try.

If you like it, then play it!!!

Re: lemme don my flame suit...

I just checked the Soldano site. Supposedly that Avenger is an SLO but OD channel only. I guess they have a low gain and high gain input so you can skip one of the gain stages for a different tone. Sounds bad a$$. Lynch had an SLO that was nothing but a single channel SLO. Wonder what they get for that amp.

Sounds like a good time I'd love to be able to play through all those different amps. I really think you have to actually play through different amps first hand before you can sure if you like it or not. I know what I like to hear in an amp (not into the whole "brutal" gain, massive bottom end stuff) so I can see your points on the death metal refs

Re: lemme don my flame suit...

The Avenger is based on the HR circut layout, ie; non-severly spendy tranformers, board mounted tubes, no teflon wiring, etc. It's essentially a single channel HR100+ with a Depth control. The Decatone is also the same as the HR100+ with the channels (low gain, mid gain and high gain) spread out and individually accessable. The Astroverb is the clean and crunch of a Hot Rod with reverb, and the lucky 13 is it's own animal entirely, and my second favorite Soldano. The ONLY Soldano that is built like the SLO and sounds like the SLO is the SLO.
Decatones sell for around $1200.

Oh yeah, both DiMartini and Lynch have single channel SLO's with no effects loop or line out. That's the "Warren DiMartini" mod...removal of the clean/crunch channel.
