Re: lemme don my flame suit...

A friend of mine this morning told me he did a similar thing over the weekend. From memory he told the amps present were:

1.Framous Cobra
2. Peavey XXX
3.Bogner XTC
4.His Marshall TSL

All amps running through Marshall cabs....Guitars tuned to B and he said his TSL smoked everything and everybody agreed. He said the Framous was badass but not up to par with the TSL. I don't know from what standpoint he was talking...I think just overall.

I'd have to hear THAT comparison to believe it!

Re: lemme don my flame suit...

Hey, it was a fun time down at Electric SullyLand this weekend. I got to check out some really cool guitars that Sully is working on and crafting. Good Times!

Regarding the amps, my favorite for high gain from the whole bunch was the Soldano Avenger. The Uber was pretty rockin', but the Avenger was more my cup of tea. I also dug the Bogner Shiva over the Ecstacy, but the XTC had a lot more options/switches/stuff. The clean channel on the Uber surprised me, popular online wisdom said that it sucked. It wasn't as good as a blackface Fender, but still good.

The Engl Powerball didn't do a whole lot for me personally. It was more of a 'murder metal' kinda tone. Tons of gain, but to my ears it sounded more solid state than my Vetta did. I don't mean this as an insult... it just had a tightness/immediate attack that I didn't like. I liked how my VHT was tight, the Powerball is tight in a different way. Still, it's a cool amp.

The Vetta did very well imho compared to tube amps straight up and through the same cabs. I was very pleased - the XTC model and Uber sounded a LOT like the real deal. I bet I could have fooled someone with them tonewise. Would they have been fooled if they played the amps? Not likely. But the basic tone was there.

One guy had an old Traynor that sounded great for black crowes/vintage overdrive.

Thanks again to Sully for hosting me at Electric SullyLand, and for just being as cool a guy in person as he is here.

Pete

Yeah, me too. Especially compared to a Framus.

Re: lemme don my flame suit...

I've owned a TSL before, I sold it, actually to buy the said JCM800 I mentioned earlier. The TSL wasn't bad, but they have QC issues. Granted, the sounds are good, they can't exactly do EVERYTHING but they're VERY versatile.

Re: lemme don my flame suit...

I borrowed a TSL from a friend of mine when I had the SLO. I think I was gonna send the SLO in for mods or something and needed a head to gig with for a couple weeks. That thing lasted about five long minutes with me. I couldn't handle it.

We just did a gig using the Vetta 2 and it was outstanding. Tone for days. Compliments galore. What a fantastic amp. Thanks for the amp review. I agree with you guys on all points.

yes they do - their are a couple models that I really liked when I tried them out - might be one of those in my future.

Sorry Sully but you're full of **** on this. No way do they sound that good. Maybe they'd sound like ass if they improved it a bit.

pete's vetta I was far more versatile than all of the above, and is not only loud enough to cut through a band, but it sounds just about exactly like the amps its supposed to.

I dunno about this. I've got a Vetta II and it totally kicks ass - I really like it a lot. Then I go plug into my Marshall Plexi reissue or on of my other tube amps and dime them. There is still something that feels/sounds/seems better about glowing tubes. Of course, no way am I giving up the Vetta.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

I don't understand everyone slagging the DSLs. My other guitarist has one, and it kicks some serious ass. It sounds 10 times better than the other guy's 5150.

Plug into a Bogner, Soldano, etc...and you'll know why.

Re: lemme don my flame suit...

Well, Soldano IMO does kick butt. I've heard the HR 50+ and the ++... talk about gain/tone. Even though, as Sully said, they are a little noisy. My only criticism of Soldano is the cleans (what cleans?) I would need a Decatone for my preference. I never been hung up on the TSL, but some guys love em to pieces.

I would dig seeing a review on a Cornford. They have several of them up the road for rent as well as a dozen Soldanos, Selmer snakeskins, and a showroom full of vint amps along with Marshall plexis & Fenders on HWY10 at solidbodyguitar.com. That place is great to just stroll thru. It be cool to rent a Cornford to try one out one day and put it though its paces.

I have a bud who got a DSL100 halfstack; I told him not to do it but he had to have a Marshall and a new one. He bought it last June and it spends more time in the shop than at home. He asked for a replacement head but they won't do that, they just keep replacing the same parts that keep blowing. Once the warranty expires, he's ****. He bought a JCM900 head for a backup and it doesn't sound that great either. He grew up when Marshall was basically the only amp for metal though, and he won't have anything else.
