  • I think I found it. Loooonnnngggggg.

If you remember some of my other posts, I'm the only with the 5150 2x12 that I think sounds like ass and was looking to sell it for another amp. I was looking at either an Engl Fireball, (or Powerball) possible a 5150II and whatever else really caught my ear. I went to some stores while I was in Richmond for a while and also tried guitars at the same time. I ended up playing a XXL combo, (ugh, I didn't care for the valvestate sound at all) As I was leaving I noticed they had a JSX?! Guy there said they just got it in that morning and nobody had even played it yet so he offered to hook it up for me which he did. The JSX is a killer amp, all three channels sound great, the ultra channel sound very Marshally but with Peavey bite I guess you could say. I only played it for 10 min and decided that was the one I wanted. We both said "that's a bad-ass amp!) It was the first time he even heard it. (BTW it was run through a Randall 4x12) I searched out more stores and more amps and found a 5150II at Ash Music, plugged it in, the guy was telling me about it, tweakin' the knobs going through the clean channel which was much better than my combo, the crunch channel was nice too, exactly that, crunch with a nice edge to it. (BTW this was through a 5150 4x12) He said this is what it's known for though as he hit the lead channel. I was blown away! It was probably about 1/3 volume, pre, and low both dimed, high almost max and about 5 or 6 on the mids. It didn't take long for me to tell him to switch cabs, we tried a XXL cab, a 1960A and the 5150 cab sounded best to me. He said that he had one but if he could get a new amp he would want to get a TSL. I plugged into it and yeah, it had more features than the 5150II but while playing it I just wanted the 5150II back, so I went back, jammed for half hour or so playing my sickest melodic death riffs I had at the time. I don't know why I like it so much more than my 5150 2x12, it's a totally different sound, maybe my 5150 has problems or some issues that I don't know about, maybe it's just because it's a combo and not a half-stack? The 5150II does sound better at lower volumes than my current amp and the gains seems to be much more useable and not so over the top. I don't know. I do know that I'm selling my 5150 for the 5150II head though. I'm so impressed with that amp I don't even really care to try anything else now. Unless maybe I A/B it with a JSX.

I would love to try one as they just started shipping from the factory.
I kind of like the way it looks too.

I'm still deciding on a cab, there are more out there to try but I'm getting the 5150II. So many bands that have tone I like use it.

I really wish I had more time to play around with the JSX, this was a smaller music store and I wasn't able to really crank it, nor was I a serious buyer at the time, it did sound nice though. Very responsive and somewhat compressed tone, not overly though, like I said before, it was very Marshally.
