Old Chandler Tube driver rack mount when I was using it.IMO you have roll off all the highs on a tube driver. Before that the old ibanez-super metal.

My 50watt has 6550's but I changed them from el34's in the late 80's early 90's.

I have an 800 and I used to use an SD-1, but I went out and got the Zakk MXR and I love it. Sounds a little different from the SD-1, but not much and in a way that I like.

Hey John remeber dude (Jim not Dan the rythm dude) from Hades with his 800 lead series and a boss SD-1 ..he had a very nice , controlled tone ..and he was a fine player!

no noise gate or nothing ..just a chord into the amp and a old 80's San Dimas..very respectable tone that left a good impression.

It's funny, so many guys have had rigs like that and the results always vary...I've heard guys with a rig exactly like you just described and it sounded like ****! (Every Time I Die) But then there are guys who sound awesome with that setup...I think tone is mostly in the hands and technique.

Yea I agree some guys come over and plug into a fender squire practice amp and sound like god. Also, Marshalls seem to vary alot in sound quality in the 70's and 80's. Its like the would just buy some parts and when they ran out used others. I have heard weak ass JCM 800's and JMP's and Great ones.

Yep if you think about it ...Hendrix , Eddie , Page , Randy , Yngwie , ULI , Zakk , Steve Stevens and countless others all have the same gear basically..A strat or Paul into a Marshall...with a couple of stomps thrown in the mix here and there...

but they all sound totally different.

I agree about the tone mostly is in the hands and technique of the player.

As far as inconsistencies between JCM 800's, at least the early 80's ones (the only version I'm familiar with) they do vary. I have had several JCM 800 2203's and they all were a little different.

With tube amps being as they are I also think that a lot of difference which people hear are not only the player but the tubes and EQ settings that they use. A good 2203 or 2204 with good tubes and an overdrive pedal (SD-1 or Tube Screamer) make some of the sweetest tones, the louder the better too with those amps, one trick pony? Yes but you don't have one of those for versatility ,you have it to melt the faces of the crowd with pure tone and power and to knock down walls

Man I owned a 50 wt early 800 lead series a red one...it was soooooo loud it made your teeth hurt..

it was the loudest amp I've ever owned or heard..and I owned several 100 wt 800 lead series ..

that thing was a freak of nature..how in the hell can that 50 wt be louder than all my 100wts..that I never figured out ....but it sure was ...and yes it was a 50 wt...totally stock.

a couple years later I bought another 50wt that wasn't nearly as loud...now that sounded like a normal 50wt.

The actual decibal difference between 50 and 100 watts isn't very big.

i heard about this? after i go past 5 on my 100 watter there really is not a big leap in volume?
anyway i bought a wylde overdrive and really am diggin it with the JCM [img]/images/graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]
it seems to be voiced perfect for the jcm?
even on it;s own through a clean amp it is very marshall like in the gain.
reminds me of havin the 800 modded for a extra pre tube

Yeah I notice a sweet spot on Marshalls volumes where it just compresses more than volume increase...except for that red freak of nature I had ...it had two volumes low and blast..

either adapter or battery.
i agree about the compressing, on my JCM it does not really get much louder after 5 but definitely more compressed
