I think your instincts are right, because if some of his info is not checking out, then the "mint" condition could turn out to be wrong too. Since you can't try it firsthand by the time you'd know if it wasn't it'd be too late.
Also, when doing a trade, who sends what first? hat kind of deal is tough enough when it's someone you know and trust, but with a guy hundreds of miles away, whose story is changing as you find out new info... uh uh.
You did the right thing. The amp might be fine, but it's already not as first represented. He said his bud bought it new, now he doesn't know. Too much leeway available to him in the "Ididn't know, my friend told me...." department. Who needs the headache if it turns out to be a beater?
