Re: SLO 100 effects loop

I know the articles on soldano. I used to own a deccatone and it sucked. I'm not trying to redesign anything. The SLO is a great amp. All I wanted was to see if anyone knew of an effect that didn't suck through the loop since I'm not always going through a PA. BTW the EQ is only for a rhythm cut & ran flat. It sucks as an EQ anyways. I think I bought it when I was 19. It doesn't change the sound that much when it's on. I hope I don't sound too aggressive. (It seems to read that way) I'm not trying to be. But I guess being the new boob, I'll get some extra criticism. My friend is a JCF member and I've seen a lot of posts on this forum in the past. I joined because all you guys are pretty much just like me. I guess I'd cut me down too. LOL!

Re: SLO 100 effects loop

LOL!! Good attitude!
I ran a Marshall JFX in the loop for a while, using it primarily for the rhythm cut (but I couldn't help but add some delay to one or two of my "lead" presets...), and really it worked pretty well. After a couple days I didn't notice the tone suck. As long as I quit A/B-ing the amp with and without, I could live with it. Really the difference was rather subtle.
The JFX also does switching, so I had my clean dry, clean reverb, clean reverb/chorus/delay, and then my overdrive channel rhythm dry and rhythm wet, and overdrive channel lead dry, lead wet, and lead kitchen sink for those Steve Vai moments in all of us.
It was the best answer to the problem at hand, without resorting to multiple heads and more crap than I care to move in and out of clubs on a nightly bassis.

Re: SLO 100 effects loop

I am going to try a G major in the loop( my brother has one so I just need to get my ass over there someday with my gear) hopefully soon and I will let you know how it works. I am not a huge fan of all the digital effects processors myself so I probably won't like it even if it is transparent but I will try to do it as uinbiased as I can.... I still say run some good effect pedals up front but I guess that just does not work for everyone.

As I was reading Chuck's last post, I was thinking about suggesting the G-Major myself...couple that with a good MIDI controller and you might be happy with that.

Re: SLO 100 effects loop

I had a SLO100 I just traded last week. I never had any luck with the effects loop and a G Major.

The amp puts a VERY hot signal through the loop, and it slammed the front end of the G-Major such that the G Major input had to be less than 50%. This puts the big hurt on any clean tones, as well as changing the overall tone of the OD channel dramatically.

The other big problem, was that the "normal" channel on clean mode has to be MUCH higher level than the OD Channel. While this seems ok...when you'd use any delay based effect and swtich from OD to clean, the volume of the OD channel jumps for a split second to the level of the clean channel, so you have a shocking but short jump in volume and echoes (or reverb) to go along with it.

From what I've done, asked and read to help alleviate this problem, I've gathered there isn't much to be done. Seems like the only way to use time based effects with the SLO is via a signal slaved to another amp, or the wet/dry set up.

I think this is just the nature of the beast.

Re: SLO 100 effects loop

I agree. Soldano's work best with stomp boxes in front of the amp. So do Boogies. As soon as you plug anything into the effects loop of either the tone gets squashed. The only luck I ever had was with a early model Intellifex in the loop and even that was marginal. The amp sounded much better dry. Now, I only use carefully chosen stomp boxes for effects.

Re: SLO 100 effects loop

I think you hit the nail on the head! It is subtle in difference (still for the bad) But, I'm too wierd, I hear everything and I'm never happy with tone. What I liked 3 weeks ago sucks now. I guess it's my own fault for wanting to play guitar. I guess it's like a video game. It does nothing but irritate you, yet you love it so much you can't get enough of it!

That's funny. I was thinking of the G Major too. Also mabey a parametric EQ. But, I'm sure if I find something I like, in 2 months, I'll hate it and run dry again.

Re: SLO 100 effects loop

Like I said. I run a Parametric EQ and a Compressor/gate limiter in my loop but I go back and forth with it. Sometimes I like it better and sometimes I dont. I use an old Boss PEQ50(Japan half rack series - THe black anodized aluminum face ones not the later grey plastic series that were made in taiwan) and a compressor/gate/limiter from the same series and it is the only thing I have ever put in there that sounded pretty good so... I will try to get to my brothers house sometime this week and see if the Gmajor works well with it. I doubt I will like it but who knows....

Well, a friend of mine will build a SLO-100 replica, and i have a question: i want extreme distortion... It will satisfy me? Dry?

Yeah. it will no problem but I am talking about the real deal and who knows what your pal is going to build you. Don't take offense to that but it does make you think.... Does a replica Hondo crap replica of some brand guitar play as good as the real thing??? No fcuking way. Get my point.

Thanks firebid, well, but this guy do a awesome job, very professional. But, the original has a monster tone so? Like Mesa/boogie triple rectifier? Thanks a lot.

I had two boogies when I had the SLO and I kept the SLO. It will crush a boogie in the gain department.
