Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

I know this is going to start a war,but its just my opinion.I have a 1983 JCM800 that was modded by Marc Cameron.I said it before and Ill say it again it is the most incredible sounding head. You should look into getting your Marshalls modded by him. When he is done with it it will kill a slo.More open and it doesnt have that high end tinny tone you get from a slo.Dont mean to offend anyone I just never played a slo that sounded any good.Give Marc a call and try it.If you dont like it I will buy it from you.Paul

No offense taken Paul. Tone is so subjective to your ears and fingers and how you manipulate the instrument to make an amp sing. I have tried amps that others swear by and I cant get my hands to get a decent sound to come out of it. The reverse scenario too... I would love to hear my SLO next to some of those modded heads you have. We should do an AMPFEST here in NJ. That would rock!

Sounds cool.I know what sounds good to me might sound like crap to another person.Im just trying to tell him that he already has 3 Marshalls, instead of selling them take one and get it modded and if you dont like it then get rid of it.If he doesnt like a Cameron mod I will buy it.

Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

Remember that a JCM800 (hacked or not) is a different animal than an SLO. They have inherently different tones to them. I like 2203 and 2204 models a lot. It would be great to own both and I think this is what the guy is after.
Neither amp "kills" the other...they just sound different.

I would definitely NOT have an old Marshall modded at this point. You want a Cameron buy one of his amps. Don't ruin a vintage Marshall!

I would love to hear a Cameron side by side with an SLO, also.

First thing Cameron doesnt make his own amps.He only does mods.Second his mod doesnt hack the amp up.Everything he does is reversable. The only extra hole on mine is on the back where he added a depth knob.If you look at my Marshall from the front you cant even tell it has a mod.I understand what you are saying about keeping a amp stock, but I am not about that.If it will make it sound better do it.I dont care.

Yep, if it is done properly and makes it sound better, have at it. I'd never be too pleased with a Marshall in stock form, and therefore would unlikely be an owner. If I bought a nice 800 with horizontal inputs, it would be in Boston getting Modded by Mark Zaim. I hear Cameron is pretty kickin as well. I choose Zaim as I'm friends and he'd do whatever it took to make me happy.

I have a considerably more collectable and more expensive CAE3+se, and I have already had changes made. I'd have a lot more at some as well soon as I figure just what I want.

Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

Only values were changed in my Jmp-I went through 10-15 marshalls and really listen to that particular amp to see what it lacks or were it needs taming down tonally
I change certain values according to how the amp sounds stock. Some Got plenty of bottom..while others only need the "ice Pick" treble smoothed out
Out of the 10-15 amps I picked the 1980 JMP 2204 (50 watt)
It has the first generation "Brass Base" hot mod in it
The 83 jcm 800 has only the "Red Base" in it that was all it needed
But with the 800 eating my hot mods I thought about pulling it from my rig and replace it with the Soldano
I thought about going for a Slo and needed some input on these amps-and all the Brothers have responded very well-and I thank you all for this input
I will be getting the Slo on thursday and I will post a reply about it also if I do decide to get the Slo I will keep the 800 & jmp because out of all the amps (Marshalls)
I have had these are the two for me
Thanks again for all the input

I know that feeling of not being able to turn up. The Hot Rod 50+ is nice. It's still pretty loud. You could look into a power attenuator. That could solve volume problems also. I don't have much experience using one. Wouldn't mind checking one out though.

Also, they come with transferable lifetime warranties. Even on a used amp, it is generally covered other than tubes, transformers, or something resulting from abuse/neglect. What other amps come with THAT feature!?

[/ QUOTE ]

A lifetime warranty that doesn't cover the transformers? Ugh. That's like a car warranty that doesn't cover the drivetrain. The transformers are the only really expensive part in most amps...

[ QUOTE ]
I have always been nothing but marshall's all my life
I use a 3 head setup with my bradshaw rig
jubille 50/100 watt for clean
1983 jcm 800-50 watt for crunch
1980 jmp 50 watt for leads
The jcm and jmp are modded but can be returned to the original state no problem
the jmp has the old brass bottom soldano hot mod and sounds like heaven
the jcm has the red bottom (silver pins) hot mod
only problem is the 800 has killed both of my hot mods-amp was retubed and service last year
I had 5 hot mods but decided to sell three on ebay because I thought I would never have this problem
Question is I need some help from the soldano guys as far as a comparision between hot rodded marshalls and soldano's-any comment will really help
Which do you prefer and how close are they?
I might retire the marshalls and grab a couple of slo's

The SLO's wont be a Marshall....

You should seriously consider getting in touch with Scott Splawn...His amps he's building from the ground up are smoking his mods...

Give him a call...

Soldano recommended THD hot plates. And the transformers are covered if they see fit.
