Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

I used to use the 2150 for some preamps I used to own.
Such as Bogner Fish.
Now it is just sitting there doing nothing.

I bought it from Megadeth Auctions.
It was Dave Mustaine's 2150.
Couple nights ago,I hooked it up with my VHT combo(used the preamp section and run the 2150).
LOUD and TIGHT.

I also used to own 2:90.
It had little bit darker tone which I didn't dig much.
VHT power amp kicks major ass and full.
Only the problem is it is so damn heavy.
You will probably need to put it in a 4Space rack and separate it from other units.

Also my main rig used to be SLO100 and VHT2150.
I used the slave out of SLO100 and hook it up with 2150.
That was my main setting for many years.
I believe Gary Hoey used to do the same setting.

Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

do your Marshalls ever overheat being in the rack like that?

I'd say check out the SLO's and see if you like them. They are great sounding amps are are highly regarded around here I don't think one amp can do it all so why not have a Marshall, a SLO and a Bogner XTC in your rig

Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

2150s built post 1991, are the ones to get I feel.

Per Steve Fryette, Starting in 1991 they increased the size and weight of the boards and copper, improved the high-voltage supply, made the chassis more rugged, added front panel fuse holders for easy access, and improved the stereo separation between channels.

So, they would be the ones to get.

Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

There are several models.
Such as Classic(w/EL34s).
I saw Pat was selling his 2150 for very cheap price like 600-700?
I have seen these selling pretty low on E-bay around $700-900.
I paid $1000 couple years ago.

Also there are 2spc version of VHT power amps and these are good too if you want to save space in your rack.

Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

I've heard some good modded Marshall's, but I think a stock SLO still wins. I've played through a lot of amps and the Soldano sounds best to me. You can have the gain on like 3 and still play Van Halen. It's got fat bottom end and cuts very well. I used to have a Deccotone (which is supposed to be an SLO with the popular mods) It ain't! I kinda hated it. The SLO smokes. Only problem is it needs to be rippin' loud! (Yeah, like I have a problem with that)

dinkyjacksonman,
Well I heard that all the guitar greats do prefer the BIG 2150
so I will check into getting one of those.
Who is Pat? Need to find out if he still has it for sale
jazzman,
There are some clubs I play who will not let you cranck the rig up very load at all

Should I think about a hot rod 50+ ?
With my marshalls only some values changed and the hot mods in I can only handle the gain at or about 5-6 after that its way to much
what happens at low volumes with the slo gain cranked?
does it get muddy?

Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

I love my 2150. Hey Cleve, where did you get white chickenheads for yours? Mine are black, did those come stock? My only complaint about my 2150 is the weigh, Sweet Jesus!! Either get a rack with wheels, or get two seperate racks, one for it and one for everything else. That might also help cut down on noise.

As for the modded Marshall vs SLO 100 debate, Marshall heads are great amps, I played 4 of them today alone(JCM 800, TSL 2000, and two vintage 70's heads). They sound awesome(all those models anyways), but you gotta remember, Marshalls start off as mid-priced amps and are tweaked on, SLO's start off being hand-wired and using the best components available. People regularly mod Marshalls(with varying degrees of sucess), but I don't know anyone finds their SLO lacking in a way which they feel it needs to be modded(though I'm sure Mike will mod yours if your really want). If you are getting a great deal on 2 SLO's, what have you got to lose? Worse case scenario you give someone ELSE a great deal on 2 SLO's(wink wink) and go grab whatever else you wanna try. You know what the Marshalls sound like, might as well start looking at something new!!

Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

I have had my Hot Mod in a Vertical 83 JCM 800 and also in a Sovtek MIG and I own a SLO. The biggest difference was the clarity and open sound that the SLO gets which both amps with the mod did not no matter what settings I used. This is all based on my ears of course... Bottom line is that I still have the SLO and I sold the others and kept the mod. If they sounded better than the SLO I would have kept them and sold the Soldano I guess. The mod I have is the Red bottom.

I have the red bottom Hot Mod in my 83 JCM 800 2203, I really like the tone it now has..I keep the pre-amp arount 6 or 7.

charveljunkie...go to http://www.bogneramplification.com/ click on mp3's on the top left. I have to stay away from those mp3's or I gonna end up with Shiva or XTC head

Re: Hot Rodded Marshalls vs. Soldano slo\'s

That soldano rig pictured above is Warren DeMartini's.

If you do a search for "SLO" in past threads in this forum you'll find a bunch where SLO owners have rambled on and on about these great amps. Myself included. Save us the typing!

I have a Bogner 100B, an SLO100, and Boogie MkIIC, and a 1970 Marshall Super Bass. They all do their own thing extremely well. The SLO100 is my single choice favorite.

The SLO100 is an amazing amp but it will not give you that classic Marshall EL34 tone. Don't expect it to because it won't. It delivers the goods in terms if a crystal clear overdrive tone that is pure as powder. If you are hearing Marshall in your head don't get an SLO!

If you are looking for the mean Marshall tone only an old non-MV Marshall set up right will deliver that.

The SLO100 is definitely my favorite guitar amplifier of all time. Let us know how you do should you get one.

The great thing about these amps is they retain their value quite well and are a safe buy in terms of not losing your ass in a resale. Also, they come with transferable lifetime warranties. Even on a used amp, it is generally covered other than tubes, transformers, or something resulting from abuse/neglect. What other amps come with THAT feature!?

I didn't realize that was Warren's rig.
I thought a rich guy on Les Paul Forum owned it.
