Re: Just Scored A Peters Amp!

A 10 watt amp can be plenty loud... I've gigged with a Univalve before, had it 1/2 way up into a 4x12 cab. It was breaking up nicely too. Depends on your drummer, however.

so, how many power tubes in a Univalve anyway?

I think there is a market for low wattage amps, they can be pretty loud as Pete says. There is a big misconception about wattage and volume levels. imho, 100w heads rarely are needed unless you are on a stadium tour More and more people are wanting something that does not blow the roof off the house, sounds great at lower volume levels, to practice with and to record in home studios...sort of like real tube amp version POD's

Univalve - one power tube, runs just about any regular octal tube (6L6, 5881, EL34, etc).

Fritz Reiser here on the board should be getting his rackmount 3 watt amp I built him tomorrow... it also has a power attenuator, and does a really decent old marshall kinda thing at a reasonable volume. It also can be used as a low wattage power amp, and can run octal tubes like the univalve can.

[/ QUOTE ]I'm just repeating what Peters himself said in his own FAQ, explaining why he wasn't making the JP-10 anymore. He made some comments disparaging the lack of headroom and suggested players buy his 50 or 100 watt amps and pull out 1 to 3 power tubes if they wanted 10-watt operation. That's the FAQ I reckon Chuck read after I mentioned it here. He said in so many words that people were unhappy with it in a band situation, influencing his decision to go with the 50 and 100 watt heads. He said he may quit making all 10 watt models for this reason.

Yup, that's what I read. That's cool as I don't need to keep up with a drummer, and cannot justify buying a 50 watt head only to have to neuter it for my needs.
His whole thing was about volume and headroom. Not at all my concerns right now, and that's not what people buy 10 watt amps for. My Studio .22 is never above 3!

Re: Just Scored A Peters Amp!

Well, another reason why he's probably shying away from 10 watt amps is that they aren't that much cheaper to build than higher wattage amps. You have more expensive transformers and a few more components, but it's not like a 10 watt amp is 1/5th the cost of a 50 watt amp to build.

I think he is fullfilling a niche, though. In the high gain low power realm, there aren't many choices at all.
I'm talking high gain, not plexi gain, like most low wattage builders sit on.

Re: Just Scored A Peters Amp!

Problem with high gain on a low wattage amp is that when you start getting lots of power tube distortion, it gets fuzzy/mushy as heck with a high gain preamp. Do you consider this clip high gain?

FYI, sound changes three times, because I swapped the single EL84 power tube to test different brands.

Re: Just Scored A Peters Amp!

Don't you get fuzziness/mushiness when using ultra high gain at low bedroom volumes anyways, regardless of wattage? My experience is watching/listening to kids playing with ultra high gain using various wattaged amps in music stores or with low volume home recordings.

Nice clip too Pete. Fantastic playing and the tone is very pleasing to listen to, I don't know how else to describe it. It's never harsh or over-the-top.

Re: Just Scored A Peters Amp!

No I don't consider that high gain. Just a touch more and we'd be there. I mute a lot more with my right hand and can use much more gain without getting muddy.

The problem with most amp builders is they keep pointing to output stage distortion and saying you don't want a high gain front end mated with that. That is correct, but I don't want 50 watts in my bedroom, either. I do want the output stage working to where it gets nice and round. You can't get that with the master on .5.

I liked using a hotplate with my SLO for the same reasons. Most guys hear "hotplate" and think "dimed amp". No, just runnin it up to where it gets fat. That's all I'm after.

Why is that so elusive?

Re: Just Scored A Peters Amp!

I hear ya chuck. But higher wattage amps do seem to have more bottom end and girth overall. Part of it may have to do with the tone of larger transformers. Maybe I should build a 10 watt amp with the Seymour Duncan Convertible output transformer I have? LOL, it's about the size of a grapefruit...

Hmm..that's true. It will be interesting to play this Peters and see what it can do.

5 days from North Dakota. That seem slow to anybody else?
