Ok so on Saturday I noticed that the guitarists in Bleeding Through and Martyr AD were all running their rigs where they had a head, a 4x12 cabinet and a 2x12 cabinet stack. I thought that was kinda odd and I'd never really seen it done before. Have any of you run a rig like this, and if so, what are the advantages?

Re: 3/4 stack???!
Not exactly that, but Alex Lifeson at one point had JCM800 212 combos with extension 412 cabs as his rig. In his case you'd have both open and closed back sounds to tap, but in the case you describe I don't know. It would also take up 1/4 less space than full stacks, and if space were an issue in your transport trucks it'd be worth cutting down the space.
Less wear on the crew's backs as well. It's also a little easier to see and reach your amp's controls if they're that 15" lower down in height; you don't have to crane your neck in low light to read and adjust your amp.Ron is the MAN!!!!

Re: 3/4 stack???!
The space thing might be an issue, but last time I saw Bleeding Through, both their guitarists were using full stacks and they had a bigger trailer this time too. Plus all of them had the bottom speaker in the 4x12 mic'd. I guess they could do the opposite of what Toru said and they could be micing the 4x12 and using the 2x12 as monitors. I'd like to try it someday.

Steve Lukather used to have a setup similar with his Rivera rig, but what looked like 2x12s on the bottom were actually 2x15 cabinets!! I think they called it Los Low-Bottom or something like that.I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

Anyone here ever run a 5150 2x12 through a cab? How did it sound, better or no?Check my Jackson themed Myspace page, hear some good metal, and check out a little shred fest by me.
