Re: looking for a new amp - recommendations?

No it isn't, some people actually believe it's the best cab ever made (I'm not kidding), which is more than I could say for the 1960. The 5150 cab supposedly sounds best at higher volumes, I'd give it a try, but I've got a lot of exams this year so I'm more of a bedroom player. Besides I love 2x12 with a G12-80/V30 combo: nice low end, tight, very clean, very articulate and great response!

Re: looking for a new amp - recommendations?

mh...which cab do you think is the darkest sounding cab available?

i think the greenback cabs sound really bright, as well as the mesa cab with vintage 30's i tried today. the 1960 was a bit darker sounding (maybe due to the lack of midrange?) although the top end was still pretty fizzy (not only with the tripleXXX but also with other amps) - not even close to the fuzzyness of the greenbacks, though.

but are there any darker sounding cabs? i can't think of any, as we already have the most common speakers covered (25w greenbacks, 70w vintage30s, 75w stock celestions).....the laney cab i'm using at the moment is equipped with h+h speakers which are similar sounding to the gt75s, but a bit lower in quality.
so how do the sheffields in the 5150 cab sound?

most amps sound best with their matching cabs period!
the speakers vioce coils are made to match the amps true potential.

That's a good question Fragle! If you want a good tight dark sound, I recommend stacking 2 2x12 cabinets. They improve your low end response dramatically. I believe the darkest and best sounding cabs around for that sorta thing are the Genz Benz G-Flex (2x12 ofcourse). The 2x12 rivals most 4x12s and is famous for have such a tight, responsive and articulate low end. It's like you can actually feel the palm mutes, because they don't get boomy although you get a lot of bass! I hate it when I lose note definition during palm mutes and everything muds up, but that'll be no more the the G-Flex. I ordered one two months ago, but I never heard from that store again, good thing I didn't pay yet!

nonono, you misunderstood me. (is that a word, misunderstand?? lol). i wasnt talking about low end (i though the triple xxx had SHITLOADS of bottom end...my bass player would KILL me ), i actually meant the high end quality of a cab. to me most cabinets sound rather harsh or emphasize the high end too much for my liking, and i wonder if there is a cab that sounds more balanced and less treble heavy. i like really dark sounds (think cannibal corpse - vile)......i'd really prefer a cab that is really dark by itself because most amps have too much treble anyway (at least imo) and a dark cab could balance that out a bit.....to me it sounds better than turning the treble way down

btw, that store seems to suck pretty hard...did you order it via internet or was it a local store?

edit: i did some internet research and the matching XXX cab is said to be.....well....not the best cab there is although jeff loomis is using them live with his peavey head.

Re: looking for a new amp - recommendations?

if you want a lil' bit darker speaker cab sound maybe try some eminence loaded cabinets - i don't know who makes them ( except of VHT) - but those are not with the line of speakers i'm thinking of - emi legends.

I don't know ... maybe it's just the Americans Gas for European made amps ( diezel, engl, koch,h&k etc - similar to the reaction mesa gets over here in Europe) but i'd rather check engl first than a xxx altough both are not bad amps

They're supposed to have a nicer hi end than celestions , and if you want to buy 4 of them you should get them for definitely cheaper than celestions - afaik the best choises should be v12 (more a vintage 30 sound) m12 (don't know if they're in Europe now , 121 and GB.

A new XXX on thomann is 1250 E, PB is about 1500, i think the cobras have gone up new ( about 200 but i may be wrong)

watch ebay also engl would be good for ya cause afaik they're also from Bavaria.

anyway - it was hard to get used engl's at good prices in Germany - i watched the market - there was a seller @ musiker-flohmarkt that was selling a savage in afaik Nordrhein-Westfalen or Ruhrgebiet for a good price - think about 1k .

I hope i don't violate the jcf-laws - i think they were made to protect US online dealers from your antimonopol agency - not to protect our from EU if not - mods , cut them out

Dark sounds,oh,that reminds me a blackened thrash band Desaster(\m/) from Germany, their lasted 2 albums sounds pretty dark to my ears, actually they are definitely one of my favorites!
after I checked their website,I found their guitarist are using Hiwatt amps, and maybe the legendary FANE speaker loaded cab

Re: looking for a new amp - recommendations?

skarhead: yes, the triple XXX is about 1250 euro, but the engl powerball is more like 1400 and i know two stores that sell the cobra for 1444 euro.

eminence....never heared of them lol. how much is a used vht cab (usually)?

its just that i found most cabinets to have an overwhelming high end rather than a high end that is part of the sound. most cabs seem to have lots of bottom, non-existant midrange (even the v30s which are supposedly midrangey sounding) and LOTS of high end. a more balanced sounding cab with a good amount of mids (maybe slightly scooped, but not totally), pleasant highs and enough bottom end for 7 string players like me would be perfect imo.

Re: looking for a new amp - recommendations?

I'd say the Recto. Espeically if you like newer Kreator, since that's what they used to get those tones. Then again, I use a TripleRec, so I'm biased.

The clean is a little more than useable - mine sounds pretty good - but don't expect a Blackface Twin or anything. My amp is articulate as hell on the distortion channels, and is very flexible.

i wonder if you are using one of the newer three channel models, or the old dual channel series? because i've already played an old dual channel which was waaaaay better sounding than the new one, especially on modern....the overall voicing was the same (obviously ) but the new triple channel sound much harsher than the old one.

btw, i LOVE absolutely everything kreator has ever released. i cant wait for the new album
they are using dual rec's as well as 5150 heads, though.

wah, it's only one store (the other one has raised the cobra price), but go to www.musik-service.de their list price is 1449 euro i think.....the powerball is actually more expensive (1499)

so, well....i'm still quite undecided...the 5150 (combo version - btw: how does the sound of the 5150I head differ from the combo version??) was really nice sounding, especially the highs were really pleasing to my ears....they didnt sound piercing or harsh (admittedly, i've turned the presence down to zero and the treble to 4,5 when i tried the combo). it also had a lot of punch and cutted through the mix really well....i only disliked its noise and the fact that it was REALLY midrangey no matter what...but i guess an EQ in the loop could fix that and tailor the amp's sound more to my preference (or the almighty bbe in the loop ). the only thing i disliked about the XXX was the way the highs sounded...as i said above, a bit too fuzzy and piercing.
the cobra...well....even though 1450 euro is quite cheap for a "boutique" amp (not really, but almost ^^)....it's still quite a lot of money, and i think the marshall cab would limit the amp's possibilities (the framus cobra cab retails at 700 euro).

i know there are a lot of 5150 users on this board, and some cobra users, too. maybe they can tell me about their experience with those amps?

i think 5150combo is based on 5150 mk1 + it's supposed to be one of the better combos because it's in reality a head + 2x12 closed back cabinet.
