there are mods to eliminate the noise from 5150 AFAIK.
I much prefer the combo over the head+cab, probably because of the tight sound that the closed-back 2x12" construction gives.

they are using dual rec's as well as 5150 heads, though.

I have a three channel Triple. I don't find mine to be any harsher than the two channel versions, and my particular one is a bit "tighter" sounding, IMO.

It's probably just the difference in preamp tubes. I seem to have a partcularly good set in there right now. [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] The three channel heads get a lot of flack for being harsh sounding, and I always find myself wondering if it's just the difference between the new tubes in the three channel and older ones in the two channels...

Obviously, that doesn't apply in all cases, but I'll bet it does in some of them.

so folks, i did LOTS of research over the past couple of days, and at the moment i'm no longer considering the cobra, the mesa, and the triple xxx. instead i'm thinking of the engl fireball, the ritchie blackmore, and the 5150 (still [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] ).
i've already played the fireball (some time ago, though), and found it to be too "british" sounding.....i haven't spend THAT much time with it, though (and my tryout guitar was **** lol). i remember it having waaay more gain and bottom end than i'd EVER use, and i think i really liked it's clean channel (only with the bright switch on, though). it was a bit more midrangey than i'd like it to be, though...but as i said above, i didnt spent much time EQ-ing.
read some of my post above for my thoughts on the 5150. basically the same as the fireball, but worse clean channel and even more midrange.
i have not played the blackmore yet.


now...with exeption of the 5150, pretty much all of the amps listed above are pretty versatile, and i'm sure it takes some time to get used to tweaking them right. so what i'm gonna do is telling you what my "Perfect" sound is like, and you guys (hopefully [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] )tell me which amp does it.


basically, my ideal tone is slightly scooped, with just enough midrange to keep the sound from getting buried in the mix; the highs are REALLY smooth, and the overall sound is REALLY thick. although i play fast metal, tightness is not a really important factor in my tone. it should not be muddy, thats obvious, but i dont need uber-tight, you know? for rhythm anyways, my lead tone should be really smooth and singing, with great note seperation (which has obviously a lot to do with playing technique, but i dont want the amp to sound messy). so basically: THICK, smooth, and good note definition esp. for lead playing.
i think the most important factor really is the way the high end is voiced. i HATE overly treble heavy, or even harsh sounding amps. i'm a fan of pretty dark sounds (as a reference, i consider dream theater-scenes from a memory to be pretty dark sounding....awesome lead tone btw; really dark, smooth, and singing...the rhythm tone isn't heavy enough, though). my tone doesn't have all that much bottom end, because i think thats what bassists are for. if i feel my balls shake while playing loud, it has enough bottom end [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

feature-wise, 3 channels would be perfect. two are sufficient, though, especially if the amp has something like a midboost switch or similar (like the mid boost on the blackmore). it isn't absolutely mandatory, though, because one can always put an EQ in the loop for leads. other than that, i dont need 50000 switches, knobs, etc.

judging ONLY by the features, i thinkt he blackmore would be perfect. having only one EQ limits the possibilities somewhat, but as long as the clean doesnt become totally unusuable when setting the EQ for rhythm, its alright. i'm not sure if it isn't too bright for me, and whether (sp?) it has enough gain for metal or not. the fireball on the other hand definitely isn't too bright imo, and has way more gain than i'd ever need (i played it with some cheap fender fat strat, with a medium output bridge pickup, and i didn't turn the gain past 12 o'clock).
while the powerball is only 300 euro more than the blackmore, i'm not sure if it's not too much for me...not volume-wise, but regarding features. it's nice to have that much versality, but feel like i dont need that much stuff....i guess....
