Re: help me pick a preamp

what about the mesa V-twin (or does it just completely suck?) i have one laying around my house and never found a practicle use for it. maybe i should bust it out and see how it sounds through the FX return so i'm just using the power amp section of my head.
    hmmmm.

Re: help me pick a preamp

I have a sp77 and love it. Great little preamps for the price. That said the best I have heard and owned was a CAE 3+. Incredible sounding preamp. More than I could justify needing though for just playing at home.

The Bogner Fish is not worth the $$$ it commands IMO! If you've got that kinda $$ you'd be happier with the 3+Se...but I've heard great things about the Engl pre's. Do you care about tube or ss?

The Carvin Quad is nice... there is a lot to explore there.

Start off with an SP77 for the 450range.

                  this looks interesting but steep

450?? Wow those must be getting popular. When I bought mine they were in the 350 range. If you do go for one make sure you get the one with the hot purple anodized face plate. That is the USA model. The gray face plate one in made in Japan.

have no idea, but you can also give the mesa Quad a shot and the H&K Access might be a good idea

I'm leaning towards the SP77 for starters.I'd give the Carvin Quad a shot because of their trial period but they don't seem to sell them anymore.

[/ QUOTE ]True, but you can get the Quad X off Ebay for $300-$400 with the footswitch, and sell it quickly for the same if you don't like it. 4 channels and many features, you might be pleasantly surprised.Hell, you might be pleasantly surprised with the PEavey Rockmaster like Dreamland Rebel mentioned. I have one that I like a lot, and they are STUPID cheap! I got mine for like $111 shipped, with footswitch. They go for $125 to $150 typically, and if you don't mind having the name peavey in your rack they are great bang for the buck. Both the Quad-X and Rockmaster have separate effects loops for each channel, crunch/lead common loop, and common loop for all channels, so you can create a switching system of sorts using the loops.

Re: help me pick a preamp

I have used a bunch of preamps ( ADA MP-1, ADA MP-2, Peavey Rockmaster, Marshall JMP-1, Soldano SP-77, and Hughes & Kettner Access. Of all of them, the H&K Access was the best for tone and features. They usually sell on E-Bay for around $500. The Soldano is a great sounding preamp also, but it is not as versatile.

I'd go for the Soldano . The Egnater IE4 is cool also . I have one linked to a VHT 2/50/2 . The Soldano will sound more old school , the Egnater is smoother with more mid bias and has 4 channels.
