Re: open cabs vs close cabs
Open cabs fill the room pretty well; the sound gose in many directions, but the bass is not very tight. The sealed cabs have tighter bass, but hit forward. They should be miked, imo. There is a third way, i.e. combined open and closed back, which are meant to have the best of both worlds. I;d go for a closed back, since they should sound better, and you would prpobably be playing in the venues with some sort of sound system, which would allow you to mic the cab.
Anyways, I'm not an expert on these. There are people around here who can really help

Re: open cabs vs close cabs
opens are more "Hard" sounding with more cut.
closed have a tighter bass response like chase mentioned and more of a fuzzy top end. overall a much smoother sound than an open back.
the old mesa halfbacks are a great combo of the 2. but i must admit i have recently switched over to the recto cabs.
there are so many options and routs to take toward "Your" tone... good luck!
