Are Celestion Vintage 30's a reproduction of...

the old Celestion 25 watt greenbacks? The reason I'm asking is that I have a 1971 Marshall cab with the original 25 watters in it, and it sounds great compared to my other 2 cabs. I have a Silver Jubilee cab that has those 75 watt Celestions in it, and I don't like the sound at all...it's hard to get them to break up. And in my Red Bear cab, I have 35 watt Celestions. They also don't sound that great to me. I would be willing to spend the money to put Vintage 30's in the other cabs if it will make them sound like my '71. So...do they? No, they sound definitely different then my 25 watt greenbacks. They take more wattage and stand up a bit better to bass as well.

The G12M is the greenback. Not a reissue, they just make them. Nor is it a reissue of the 30 watt G12H. The vintage 30 is its own thing. The greenbacks sound good, the vintage 30's project a little better, and the 30 watters (it's been a few years since I had them) I remember liking them better than the 25's.

If you like the sound of your 71 cab with the 25's in it, get the greenbacks (G12M) That's probably what's in it. Did you open the cab up? Just look at the back of the speakers. That's a good way to tell. At least if the magnet covers are still there.

Oh, yes I have had the cab opened many times. I've owned it since 1983. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] For some reason, I didn't know they still made those speakers. Where can I get them? Thanks.

IIRC, you can still get Marshall cabs with those speakers in them.

Musician's Fiend has them, so I guess almost everyone can get some for you. There should be some on ebay as well.

Musicians Friend or Music 123 will have them. It's probably cheaper to buy a cab with them than it is to buy the speakers alone.
