Volume boost will not effect gain or EQs.
It just slightly turns the volume up.
Mesa's rectifiers have solo switch that will do the same thing.
When I had a Bogner modified Marshall, I wanted to get that done to my head because I was able to get a great sound from my amp but only 1 sound.
I wanted to get a switchable solo switch to turns the volume slightly up without adding any gain.
Bogner can make a custom made footswitch too.
Somehow when I received my amp back, I found out Bogner forgot to install that feature.. [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I also talked with John Suhr and he does this modification as well.

Another thing you culd do without modding the amp and spending money,use a pedal like Fulltone Fat Boost and turn the volume of pedal all the way up like 8 or 9 and boost(gain) all the way down to 1 or 2.
This way, the pedal will add volume but no gain.
It is a great way to use your amp for soloing.
I used to do this stuff with amps like modified Marshalls, Soldano SLO100(which I only used lead CH with this setting for seloing).
This can be done with a pedal like Ibanez Tube Screamer too.

OR if you have enough money, buy 2 Uber and use an A/B box.

Its all good, difrent strokes...on the boost thing, the GE7 didnt boost the gain at all really, I also on occasion used a mxr micro amp through the loop which was also pretty transparent...

After playing the Uber for like a year on and off here, seems lotsa amps are doing as well or better. I'm liking the ENGL stuff at this point. The uBer just wan't the ticket. Nice, but, not that nice.

Have you played one much?

You have NO idea how hard it is tracking down an amp like this in Norway! So, no, I haven't found one. That's the fickle part, but I'll have to try it somewhere. I can't really base a purchase like that solely on soundclips.

YEah, I hear ya, I bought most of my rig unheard, and have a CAE3+se, and a VHT 2150. Talk about apprehension on every purchase, yikes.

Honestly, I'm thinking there are better sounding amps than the Uber at this point. And ENGL is one of them. They are considerably more versatile and sound heavier.

I've played the Uber a LOT, and liked the lower volume preamp sound, but it lost the sound I liked at high volume and went into a super cranked classic Marshallesque sorta sound. I'll assume it was the EL34s that were adding the flavor to it.

I'm into extremely heavy and/or sick crunch guitar and it just isn't something that I'd buy at this point. It's cool, but has been outclassed.

I'm liking the ENGL 570 preamp as it is pretty sick sounding. As well as the Framus Cobra, and ENGL Powerball.

Talked to my local guitar GURU (And I mean guru [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] )
Anyway, he kind of talked me out of the über. He gave me a few other alternatives, and here's one that looks really exiting, even though it doesn't look that good [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img] But I can't find any clips! My only hope, as it seems, is checking out clips by the Belgian Death Metal band Prejudice... But I hope some of you guys have heard of this. The one man company is called Steavens, and the guy studied wiring alongside with mr. Bogner.

My tech actually said that the reason why he didn't have the reputation Bogner has, is because 'he didn't move to LA and do Cocaine with the right guys'.

I can't honestly judge ANY amp without comparing them side by side ...

as we all know you can NOT judge ANY amp's "tone" by a mere sound clip...

I heard PODs that were recorded great and Engls that sounded like ass in the stuio and live....Nope , you can't judge anything by a soundbite...it must be COMPLETELY hands on for me..

and my hands (or ears) never touched or heard anything heavier than a Uber ...but when I do ...if I do...I'm sure I'll buy it.

But I do agree with my conclusion that the Uber does suffer from the EL34s at high volume levels .

It has a awesome preamp section ...at moderate levels ..for recording and practicing...This beast sounds amazing ...but when I crank it up the El34s seem to clean up the sound and it does morph into a midrangy "honking" tone much like an old Super Lead....but much more gain of course.

But as far as a throaty , brutal tone is concerned I haven't heard better or (heavier)..not in person.

Well this is my amp these days and I freaking love it.

The dist channel is the most awesome Ive played or heard. I like the clean channel too. I am amazed at what a great tone I get at lower volume levels. Its by far the best head Ive had for playing low and still having good tone. I juust EQ a little differently when I crank it up, which I do with most heads anyway, so I have not had any issues there. As far as the voicing etc, its awesome. I dont play in any drop tunings, dont own a 7 string, etc. I play A440, usually use strats with maple boards and I really dig the tone from this amp. Paired with my UberKab, it the most destructive half-stack Ive owned.

More versatile than it gets credit for as well. Sometimes I turn the gain down for a more Marshallesque tone and slam it with my 1983 DS-1. Tightens it up and I am digging it. OD channel cleans up nicely with your guitar volume knob too for in between tones.

Booger Uberschatt... biggest waste of $2400 that I've spent in a long time (this was before they raised the prices btw). The main problems with the Uber are that you can't match the clean & lead channel's volumes at high volumes; the clean channel doesn't have enough output when the lead channel volume hits 12:00. The FX loop flatout blows chunks. It sounds best with rack units (line level fx) but it still sucks too much tone and doesn't have a send control (the new version now does). Also for versatility, this is basically a 1 channel amp if you gig at normal volumes with it. I for one don't like having to tweak knobs on a dark stage, so whoever said the Uber is "versatile", needs to define the word "versatile". Bottom line: I'll take a VHT UL/CLX or Diezel Herbert anyday... either one can do what the Uber does and so much more. BTW I also bought the matching UberKab which is actually a very nice 4X12.

But for dudes like me who are just a shredder hack ...I only use the dirty channel anywhoo...

I don't play clean ...it's not what I do...Nope , Nope , Nope.

and the Uber squirts and oozes shred more than a highly engorged Peter North with a case of blue balls. [img]/images/graemlins/eek.gif[/img]

I actually really like the Uber but felt it wouldn't cover enough ground for me as I like a wide varity of metal and not too much of the modern sounding overly gainy stuff. I liked the Shiva too but it didn't get mean enough for me. I was considering the Uber or Shiva but figured I just bite the bullet and get a 101B.
