Re: tube amps w/ standby switch

So what if your amp tube amp only has a power switch?

Should I leave it be after turning it on for a few minutes? or have the tubes already been hit hard with the watts?

Makes a lousy thump when i shut it off. . . .I know its common, but it doesnt sound right. :s

It should take it a few seconds to warm up anyways. I'd leave it alone for about 30 seconds, just to be sure.

Wow, I had no idea about this. My Hot Rod Devile 410 thanks you for it.

Anytime, man. That's why I asked...I knew some people (like me) had heard about it but weren't sure, and others may neer have heard about it.

I've never had an all-tube head, and my hybrid only has a power switch. I'm thinking about getting an all-tube head, so I figured I should get educated!

Here's how I do it:

Power switch to ON
Wait 1 - 3 minutes (for tubes to warm up?)
Standby switch ON
Play

To turn off
Standby switch OFF
Wait 1 - 3 minutes (tubes to cool down)
Power switch OFF

This is a Marshall JCM800, and the tubes have lasted over 14 years.

Ron... King and Hanneman play JCM800's too, don't they? Maybe modded, kinda feels like I've heard something about that.

King, Hanneman, Zakk Wylde, there are a LOT of metal musicians out there playing JCM800's. IMO you have to put something in front of a JCM800 to make it sound best, but they are kickin' amps!!

What is it using for power tubes? I know some low wattage amps that use small tubes don't really need to warm up like other large tube power amp sections. A general rule is that bigger tubes like the KT88's should be warmed up longer than say EL84's. I let my EL84's in my Mesa warm up for about a minute. I've heard some people say you can just turn EL84's without any real warm up time. I can wait the minute to extend tube life though.

I don't need a pedal; mine is modded with an extra gain stage. Crunchy!

Tubes don't cool down after playing and putting it in standby mode. Having standby on while powering down just keeps signal from going through them while the tubes discharge. Also, if you can wait 10-20 minutes before moving your amp after powering down, that will add life to your tubes. Banging them around while they are warm shortens their life.

Yeah, Ace already said that.
