• 2 steps down tuning will ruin my speakers? Urgent!

Hey, there. We're playing tomorrow, and our friends might want to use our gear, as well. They tune 2 steps down. Will they ruin my speakers? I'm using the MArshall 2x12 TSL100 cabinet+ Engl thunder 50. There is one vintage and one modern type speaker. The power rating of the cxabinet is like 140 watts.
Thanks for help

I wouldn't worry about the two steps down thing.

As long as they don't try to over chug up your amp with low end to where it distorts the speakers heavily, then that would be a problem. But, you'd hear it pretty quick and obviously.

If they are using basically the same volume levels and tone settings that you have success with, two steps down isn't going to an issue.

Have a good show!

if its gets too flubby, just turn the low end down on the amp and you'll be fine.

but guitars and amps were made to play and sound best in E standard. thats where there are voiced naturally, and the best suited tuning for the normal male vocal range's transition from normal to faucetto.

heavyness is in the cymbols and songwriting. not your tuning.

but hey, if you like it. go for it. i did it when i was a kid.

I'm still down to D. E just isn't heavy enough sounding anymore to my ears...

Hearing King Diamond chugging in D is very cool. Abigail in E is like too easy listening for me, haha... Just seems weak somehow...

I agree. D is my favorite to play in. Oddly enough though, I've been experimenting with B recently, and it is growing on my fast.

I can hardly play in E anymore.

We're playin in D, since our singer can't hit some notes. But our friends are crazy... Two steps down!
And thanks for wishing me luck. There will be like 5,000 people there, and we need to get the bloody first prize!

I would be so bugged out in front of 5,000 people....good luck. I think you have already gotten good advice...use your ears and adjust the amp accordingly. Whenever I tune down I go chug chug chug a chug chug a chug a....you know the real slow deliberate riff.....I can't get past it so I always end up back to standard tuning....not trying to change the subject...just venting my personal shortcomings..good luck.

I like playing in drop D lately (such an emo kid) but I also like tuning my guitar down to C# and dropping the low string down to B. Good times!

I tune to D (drop C), and I wouldn't have it any other way. E sounds way to happy. La la la!

I play in standard E pretty much all the time. I do like the sound of tunings like D and B, but I HATE the way the guitar feels in such tunings.

I get my "heaviness" more from my songwriting and production, very similar to Opeth. They don't need to down-tune at all.

We play in Bb no problems with the speakers.

I tune to C standard. I can play "heavy" in any tuning, but tuning to C I feel is the heaviest I like playing in. I've plugged straight into a board tuned to E, with no amp, no modeling, no effects, and had people tell me that my playing "Had balls for days".

However, if you hear my amp ring out a C power chord, you'll sh!t your pants. It's just not the same when I am tuned to E.

Get an Alesis 3630 and set it for Peak Limiting, so they can chug all day and they won't overload the Input of the amp enough to blow your cones.

Or make them play after you so you don't get "sloppy seconds"

Better yet, tell them to get their own friggin gear

That falls more into the "better safe than sorry" catagory, as opposed to what you would actually NEED, which in this case would be nothing. Your speakers will be fine. Just make sure he doesn't dime out the BASS knob(turn all the way up).

It also depends on what kinda pedals the guy is running into. If he's using a Chorus with a 30Ms Delay on it and no Rate or Sweep (just to fatten the tone) and has an external EQ pedal set just right, he can get bass levels that even turning the bass knob all the way down won't fix (I blew quite a few speakers with just such a setting in a GSP21).

I'd definitely tell them to get their own gear, especially if the reason they want to borrow yours is because their speakers are blown.

Never lend anything that you cannot replace in one day.
