You'll always sound better mic'ed through a good PA with a decent soundman. Not a bad idea, if you're swapping solos, to give him a diagram of who plays solos in which song, so he can boost the right guy at the right time.
Otherwise he'll pick te guy who "looks" like the lead player and boost him every time, till he catches on a couple bars in and your solo's build was lost while the rhythm was cranked.

The sound man can be your friend or foe, and you are in charge of making sure he's your friend. Sometimes he's the other band's friend and you're fukked, but most of the time you can make friends by treating him like a pro, the way you want to be treated, and not acting like a rockstar. He's used to bands who do that, so do something different and show respect. Of course some clubs just have crappy sound techs, but as a rule treat 'em nice and they won't fukk you up, and will do all they can to make you sound good.

Yeah, Band #2's guitars, one has 60 watts and 2 12s, the other 120 watts and 4 12s; no way will that be balanced without micing unless the XXX guy turns down, and how likely is that? Let 'em hear a board tape were their guitars aren't eve in there because the're nit mic'ed and they will probably get the idea.

I'm real big on using a seperate patch/setting on my amps for solos so I can have a volume bump - 2db tends to work pretty well imho. That way, I can blend in during the rhthyms and fills, and peek out a bit more while I'm doing solos. On songs where I get to basically play lead the whole dang song I just keep it boosted. What sucks with preprogrammed lead boosts in your patches is:

Sound guy has you at a nice high level at soundcheck.

Guitar guy hits lead boost, red light flickers, sound guy pulls associated channel down (you).

Lead boost goes off, sound guys watches his drink and a red head at tha bar.

Red light isnt flickering anymore and his job is well done...

And now, you are lost under everyone since he turned you down and hasn't bothered to check back to your level and see if you're up high enough.

Happened to me before... Fifth beatle comes inhandy on tyhis one, haha...

We always went for the fifth Beatle option. He also doubles as security when we load in or out. You usually have to make several trips, unless you have a crew.Nothing makes me more nervouse than having 20 to $50,000.00 worth of equip. sitting in the parking lot in the back of a couple trucks. This extra man is priceless when it comes to the soundcheck as well but even more so as the room fills up and the dynamics of the room itself change.

Re: How do you all get your levels even on stage?

For me I use a 2x12 cab on stage, or depending on the size of the place, both my 4x12s. I don't turn up really really loud. Just loud enough for that tube tone in my Mesa to start to open up.

I place the cab as far back as I can, and if possible, I'll aim it straight ahead, but the place it goes is to the backs of the PA speakers. If I'm using my 2x12, I'll sometimes put it ontop of my road case.

That said, I play loud enough to use my amp as a personal monitor. Then a mic goes from my cab to the snake, snake to the board, and let the sound guy take it from there.

Remember this, A sound guy can make gold sound like shit, but never shit sound like gold. Bottom line, if the sound coming out of your amp sucks...it's going to suck through the PA, just be louder.

the best thing you can do is be nice to the sound man and never argue with him. if he's saying turn down, just do it and don't complain. i know, i hate it to. but if you piss him off, you'll sound like shit then and every time you play there again. if they even ask you back.

oh yeah, forgot. for you 2 guitar bands. just have both guitarist go to the front and center of the stage. play a couple bars of the same thing and make sure you hear each other as evenly as possible. then everything else is up to the sound man.

Thanx! Yup, It's the proto. Smoke makes for cool pix but, it gets a little goofy when the thing is set to blast right at you every 30 seconds! In that shot I'll bet it was just about to blast me again.

I watched one show we had video taped and I'm just a puff of smoke with a Jackson head poking out!

                        Looked very "Spinal Tap"!

Re: How do you all get your levels even on stage?

The second gig we played out with my band where I play guitar was a disaster from a sound standpoint. We played at a club that I'd never played at before but heard really bad things about. We plugged in and started testing some levels trying to make our sound even on the stage and all that but then the sound guy started playing around with the monitors and then he said "Okay, guys, time to soundcheck"

So we did the drums first and then bass, which was the first big problem came up. He tells our bassist to keep turning up (he didn't want to DI the bass, he wanted to mic the cab). Basically, he kept telling him to turn up until his rig was shaking the entire stage and the drummer couldn't hear anything. That's when we pretty much knew that it was going to be bad. Then he tells me that its my turn and I start off at my usual practice volume (loud!) and keeps telling me to turn up... I ended up getting my Peavey Triple XXX at 5 on master, 7 on channel volume, with my effects loop cranked up all the way to get more volume. It was so friggen loud on stage that whenever I played anything high up (pinch harmonics, leads). Then he does the same thing with the other guitarist, who ends up getting his Marshall VS100 (or whatever it was; its a loud head!) up at full volume.

We're all cringing because our stage volume was so loud it hurt. And he tells us to run a song and we get through it without any problems, despite the loud levels. My buddies who were there to check us out started yelling "MORE VOCALS! CAN'T HEAR THE VOCALS" when we tell them that we're running the stage sound right now, not the house and their reaction was pretty much "What the f___!" because it was already too loud. They said that the venue was so loud that it was uncomfortable!

That performance was the only performance I've ever done where my ears have been in pain after playing!

Now a days we have a couple of people that are regulars at our shows so we end up not having any level problems, though I really do want to get a wireless system so I can check out what we sound like from the crowd during sound checks.

It also helps to have a vocalist in the band who doesn't play an instrument, then he can just take his mic, stretch the cable out a ways and listen as he runs through his vocals.
