Re: Overdrive and JCM 800

Analog Man SD-1 or the Zakk MXR pedal. I've spent a LOT of time messing with pedals in front of my JCM 800 2203 ZW head and have been happy only with these two. With either of these pedals and your JCM you should be able to get everything from AC/DC to Lynch to Metallica. good luck

      Re: Overdrive and JCM 800

I use a SD-1. It was $40 so I hopped on it back when I didnt know the difference between a Flanger and a Whammy bar

Its good, makes it sound godly. I have a mod planned out that should make it less harsh, less noisy, more bassy, smoother, . . .basically fix every fault it has.

ALTHOUGH, its not very transparent. If I got a tubescreamer, would It be more transparent?

      I use it into a JCM 800 4010 (1x12 combo).

Im so happy I finally have a JCM 800 so I can proudly post in these kinds of threads

A Furman PQ-3 into the front end of the JCM 800 can work wonders! You can dial in some great tones with the PQ-3 into any of the older Superleads, JMP's, JCM's, and Jubilee's. I love mine!

I have always heard about using a Tubescreamer, but when I did it with mine, the sound became very midrangy. It was great for leads but had to be turned off for rytym stuff, it was just too midrangy for my taste.

That's how you use it Rick; straight amp for rhythm, Tubescreamer or SD-1 for leads. Although the BOSS Blues Driver doesn't remove the bass like the SD-1 does, you might like that better.

oh, btw, if anyone is interested in a custom boost pedal, email me at [email protected]. So far, I've had good reviews/results with JCM800s, Boogies, Soldano SP77, Soldano HR 50+, some of my homebrews, and other amps. It's not a transparent boost, it adds some grit, girth and mids - but most of the people who have tried one really dig it.

I can reply on that one. Balls is probably a good all in one word that I can say it adds. lol Sounds great with my sp77. It gives chords a growl that I find similar to George Lynch's type tone. Being that's the type of Rhythm tone that I prefer I have been leaving the boost pedal Pete made on all the time. The lead tone gets a boost in the mids and takes away the bright highs that a lot of people don't like about Soldano's stuff. I like both type lead tones so it adds more versatility to my rig. Regardless of whether you have the boost adjustment set to equal volume in/out, or whether you have set to boost the volume a bit as well, it still changes the tone to what I described above. I like it as a tone shaper more so than for just a boost in the lead tone. If I recall I think Pete said the pedal is also great for people who like to adjust component values to custom tune their tone also. I'd recommend Twister Amps in a heart beat. First Pete turned me on to using good vintage tested tubes. Then he suggested I change the resistors in my sp77 to good quality metal film ones, after he dug up schematic of the sp77 that I needed to fix the half ass mods or repairs the previous owner had done. That suggestion fixed everything I didn't like about the sp77. And now the boost pedal.

Thanks for the kind words Chris, glad she's workin well for ya.

I use a Soldano Hotmod in mine and it is awesome. I have run a SD1 in front of it and that was good. I liked the TS-9 with the Analogman silver mod and that was very nice too. The Hotmod is the answer for me. No pedals. Just plugs in and adds gobbs of gain. It makes it a whole new animal. It cleans up well when rolling the volume on your guitar back too. My head is an 81 2204.

Forgot to add I had one of the originals and sold it too.

                  Thanks for the replys everyone

Firebird-I forgot about the hot mod-can you even buy them anymore or are they ebay only. Never tried one-is that the one that plugs into a tube socket?

Not going to mod it, bought it new in 87 and it has sentimental value, plus I seen a lot of fried heads. I wpuld just buy a modded head if thats what i was after.

Ebay. That is the only place to get them. They are really great. They come up on ebay every once in a while....
