with my old Yamaha RGZ321.

[/ QUOTE ]I used to have a black RGZ321P, it kicked ass!!! I kinda miss having a H/S/H guitar and wish I never got rid of it. I loved the height-adjustable locking nut on that thing, too!

[/ QUOTE ]OOPS! I misstated; it's the 312, HSS. I always get that wrong and am too lazy to open the gigbag. Still, great neck, decent pickups and the Floyd knockoff's not bad either! For $100 it's nicer than any Performer Series Jackson I've ever played, even if it is made in Taiwan.Well, not nicer than Newc's Kelly that I had, but then it had a JTX neck so that definitely does NOT count

[/ QUOTE ]
LOL Either way, all those old RGZ Yamahas were cool. I liked the Floyd copy, but the screw-in bar got stripped on mine a couple times and I wound up putting in a real Floyd and was happier. Anyway, I think we should be fighting about amps or something in this thread!

Someday, they'll invent something that just sounds good on its own, without having to be modelling something.

Is this the part where I tell you that 28 of those amps are originals and not models of anything?

play what you like . who gives a shit what the other guy likes if you like your tone then thats all that counts.me personally i would probably end up spending more time tweeking the vetta then playing it . its the same reason i went back to pedals instead of rack gear but thats just me.

I agree with you also bluebullet, I tend to go nutty tweaking the vetta. Pete is the master when it comes to tweaking that amp. I have presets setup for bedroom practice only for a couple of guitars. For the simple stuff even though my Engl has a lot of knobs buttons etc. I have that thing on set and forget lol!

Re: No More Pissing Matches...

I have to agree in the same sense, I know what works for me, and it's my current tube set up, however my practice amps, usually are not tube. My current, the line 6 spider 2, gets played, in my spare room about 2+ hours a day. It is good at what it does.

I've always said, it doesn't matter what brand, or whatever, as long as you like it, it feels good, plays good, and gives you tone you like. I know what I like. Would I say Pete's an idiot for liking the Vetta? Hell no, he's played all sorts of different amps, and I'm sure if he didn't like the Vetta, he wouldn't own it.

Goddamnit!! I will go to the grave swinging my VHT by it's fuckin' power cord before I give in to this modeling bullshit!!

[/ QUOTE ]You know, no one's asking you to "give in" to anything. All anyone's saying here is that they have their uses, and that it serves THEIR purpose. A swiss army knife IS better than an axe when you need to strip cables for soldering, or cut your fingernails. No one has said that they sound 100% as good as the amps they model. What has been said is that they mimic them with enough accuracy to convey the essence of that amp's characteristics, along with those of a bunch of others, enough to grant great versatility to one compact rig. Versatility sacrifices specialization, but really has its own appeal. Pete appreciates tubes as much as anybody here, and seemed skeptical of modelers live at first - he first spoke of them as for quiet computer recording, but kept his mind open and kept checking them out as they improved. He hasn't abandoned tube amps, he builds them now. He has the lab tech experience of building tube amps at home, and also has the field experience of playing club gigs pretty often. He came to the modelers in the cause of reliability and reasonable setup time, from oberving his posts over the last couple of years. I also recall Sully posting about the ampfest where Pete's Vetta held its own live next to all the boutique tube amps. To me that indicates that putting substantial time into getting the best out of it makes much difference. Pete apparently reached a point where he felt the models sounded good enough to be of real use, and aproached the Vetta with the goal of getting the best out of it he could. John, I have mucho respect for you and your background as well, but I feel you've always approached modelers "holding your nose". If you've already decided something sucks, you're going to seek evidence to substantiate your claims. Your experiments have been conducted mostly in music stores for the modelers, I reckon. By contrast, your work with tube gear has been in your "laboratory" where you have spent countless hours, and have admitted you're still not satisfied, though more satisfied than before. I wonder, if you were playing out 2 or 3 times per month, doing covers of various rock formats, whether you might change your mind, if for no other reason that you wouldn't want drunks stumbling into your C.A.E./VHT rack spilling beer into the guts? If you're playing infrequent gigs, or doing one sound for 1 hour each night, you can afford to go with "your" sound only. If you're playing 2-3 nights every weekend and have to cover the gamut of sounds, you need to have a versatile rig if you want to do a good job. If you're content to play a Tom Petty song with a Cannibal Corpsesound, fine, but don't expect to get asked back. If the prospect of playing a Tom Petty tune horrifies you, then stick with your 5150 and God love you! One more tool analogy; you can't change spark plugs with a pipe wrench! Each job requires different tools.

I will say a few things that turn me off from the Vetta.
1. It would really suck if it crapped out live. At least with tube amps you can bring spare tubes which usually solve a problem.
2. Its a pain in the butt to be forced to have different settings for the same patch pending if you play it at home at low volume or live at high volume.
3. It just doesn't look as good as Marshall or Mesa.
Do you really think that the power section on a software driven solid state amp makes that much of a difference? I can't answer that one. I will make one observation regarding another amps power section. The Galien Krieger ML250 has twin stereo high speed switching transformers and it absolutely kills. You can hook that sucker up to a 4 x 12 and push major air. Even the twin onboard 5" speakers are super loud and clear. Does the Vetta have the same type of power section?

Yep, and easy to fix, BY LINE 6 SERVICE who has to put a new board in it! But not by some service guy in hicktown usa in time to do your gig when your amp poofs.

[/ QUOTE ]
I can ship it back to line 6 and get it fixed and returned, waaaay faster than it takes my local amp guy to even look at my tue amps and call me with an estimate. Plus, I would not let Jethro in hick town touch my tube amp.

That's great if it works for you. My other guitar player had a mesa and it didn't sound good until you cranked it. Just what you need in a bar with 100 people.

Someone said "your not a tube snob if you like tubes". True, but if you poo poo anyhting that does not have tubes, yes you are a tube snob. I have heard a lot of tube amps that I thought sounded like crap but I don't classify all tube amps as worhtless poop.
