I wonder, if you were playing out 2 or 3 times per month, doing covers of various rock formats, whether you might change your mind, if for no other reason that you wouldn't want drunks stumbling into your C.A.E./VHT rack spilling beer into the guts?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Up until a year ago or so, I played out twice a week for years, and before that when I use to make a LIVING doing, I playeds 3-4 times a week. And ALL with tube gear. But, I did play metal. No Paula Abdul fading into Linkin Park Medleys really. So, yeah, maybe not so varied.

From Marshalls 800s, 900s, to Peavey 5150s to Marshall rack Tube amps and misc preamps etc etc... To me, there is nothing better than a living breathing tube amp crunching some good metal out, vibrating your jeans and stagefloor and feeling the chug resonating in your body and your guitar, it's a very visceral feeling... Tubes live and breathe and I like that. And yeah, I would drag my CAE rig out still if I got the interest. And we didn't/don't play where the patrons walk among the band, we always had/have stages and no one would be spilling or ever did spill beer on my stuff, except for the occassional drippage on my MidiMAte and Wah pedal.

The sad thing about tube amps is they are heavy, and expensive. And you need expensive ones to realy feel what I am talking about. Although I was in the G-spot with most of my rigs from the 800s on up, I find it sweeter the more quality you get. Compare an 800 to a Vetta, and you won't be as impressed. Especially in your bedroom. Get a good tube amp up loud, and the feeling will hit you.

Although I'd own one given the right price, I compare a Vetta to "old country buffet", lotsa stuff, and medium quality reproduction. Not bad and does the job, just not that amazing. A good tube amp is more like a good high quality restaurant Steak dinner. The real deal. Not no Salisbury steak ya know.

I love those food references, haha...

It's getting time where I'll probably be out doing something again. The hard work, longs hours and crappy payouts have lessoned in my memory and you never know, I might be persuaded again. And I'll be breaking my back carrying my tube amps. Although I may have to go to a Power Ball for some convenience.

Not argueing, just telling ya my thoughts. Your milage may vary, yadda yadda...

Well John ...we can get something together as long as you help me carry my refrigerator size bass amplification ensemble that I must buy ...if we do this thing.

I sure would like to give you a hand carrying my bass amp...but the doctor tells me not to strain myself...and he knows best..

John this sounds like fun...when can we begin..

It's weird - Cleve and are similar in a lot of ways, totally different in others. Maybe I'm Bizzaro Cleve, or he's Bizzaro Pete, but it's really funny.

I used to gig 2-3 times a week and made a living by doing that and teaching guitar at a music store. I even had some of the same amps - JCM800s, 900s, a plexi and a JMP50 watt I wish I still had, over 1/2 dozen boogies, a VHT, a Budda, Egnater, THD, etc. I didn't like the limitations that many tube amps had, namely the damned things never sounded the same from night to night. I had a few spectacular failures onstage (the board in my EL84 .50 smoked at an outdoor gig) and was constantly chasing tones. Some nights I would have THE greatest tone I ever had, the next night or sometimes even the next set something would change on the amp and the tone would be normal again or lackluster. This stuff drove me nuts.

I didn't play much live the last few years. Last time I played out much was awhile back - we did original kinda bluesy stuff, and I used a THD Univalve cranked with a Fulldrive II pedal. That was my rig, into a sealed 2x12 ADA splitstack. Sounded great for what I was doing.

Now for what I'm playing, I don't know if I'd want to take out a really nice amp like a Bogner or SLO or CAE rack setup... because one thing I hate is getting my gear all smoked up. I'm even contemplating getting several 'model' series Charvels for cheap and using those onstage. My band covers stuff from old Dio to Night Ranger to the Tubes to Satriani/Vai/Eric Johnson and even some Journey and Motley Crue... it would be hard to find ONE tube amp that would get close enough for everything. I had an egnater TOL 100 that was close, but it didn't do the modern thing as well as I wanted.

I like my Vetta, but it's more of a plowhorse than a Ferrari. Plus if something happened at a gig and it was damaged/stolen/whatevered, I could get another one quickly and easily, load in my presets, and I'm back where I was.

But I can see Cleve's point. He can see mine. And we can discuss this again in a few months.

And I love tube amps, I love modelling amps, I love AMPS. I still have over 1/2 dozen tube amps from 3 watt screamers to a 50 watt Soldano HR50+.

It's like Randy Rhoads said when asked who his favorite guitarists were - he said he liked anyone who played guitar. Well, I like amps.

reason I say this I bought a $200 Line 6 30 watt spider for the boy...and that has been daddy's new toy since he got it for Christmas...damn thing is a blast to play..I never nailed Eruption like this in my life...it's sounds like the freakin' record..I wish I can throw down a recording of me doing a "corruption"...my take on eruption and post it for sh!ts and giggles..it's uncanny. I think the JMP-1 gives me more of that "tone"...but the Line 6 has all the VH one bells and whistles....well it just makes it really fun to play.

I use my POD 2.0 every single day and love it. I took the HD147 to a rehearsal though and I was extremely disappointed by it. It sounds amazing by itself at all volumes but as with the other Line 6 amps it just falls apart when playing in a high volume band situation.

I do believe that Line 6 has some very innovative products though, maybe they need a digital/tube hybrid amp to make the package complete?

That really surprises me... I took my 50 watt soldano HR50+ to a band rehearsal along with my Vetta, and the Vetta cut just fine with the volume at 1/4 up. I had to run the soldano at half master volume to get the same amount of punch through the PA (we rehearse loud). I don't know what your settings were on the HD, but my Vetta (same power section, or damn near) punches through a mix with no problems.

By Pete.."Ok, this one threw me for a loop."

well Pete it's true..I wish they had stuff this cool when we were kids...

man if I would have heard that little Line 6 spider amp twenty years ago...I would have truly crapped myself..

Like I said Pete , a Vetta just may replace my Marshall rack..maybe...I'll have to do my homework on that one..

I think a Vetta and a Uber should cover a lot of sonic ground..enough for my needs anyway...I don't even play clean..unless you consider rolling back the volume knob clean..

I'm a one trick pony....that's why that Uber is cool with me...I use one sound for one style of music..that's all I know ...that's all I do....no covers for me....I don't want to learn other peoples crap when I can make up my own crap..

I'll leave the cover song task for John with all his programming insanity...I'll just play bass ...that's easy...I can do that!

I'll just play bass and create Beer Tsunamis..

I always had people asking "whats in your rack" or "what are you playing thru". One gig, I forgot my 4x12 (dont ask, f'n drummers...) and actually played an entire night, 3 sets, with just the amp. It looked sooo weak, we put the amp on a milk crate, miked up both speakers, ran my stage volume thru the side fills, and amazingly sounded great. Dude, I have the exact same story. People used to chuckle when I walked in with the ML250 and put it on my 4 x 12 cabinet until they heard it. Holy crap did that amp sound great. I did many gigs with just the ML250 either mic'd or ran direct. Those 2 x 5" speakers could be heard over loud drums with no problem. This thread mellow'd nicely.
