• Soldano Hot Rod Question

What are the tonal differences between the Hot Rod 50 and the HR 50+, assuming both have an XL mod? Which amp do you prefer?

Re: Soldano Hot Rod Question

I avoided getting a HR50+ for the longest time, since 'everyone' knew the 50 sounded better than the plus.

I think it's bunk personally. I put my HR50+ up against an SLO, and they had a lot more in common than not. Now, would I rather have an SLO for the same price? SURE! For $800 more? Not worth it right now, maybe someday.

The clips I posted of my HR50+ are pretty close to how it sounds live. Plus you already have a twisteramps booster pedal to goose it with

I've had both and never knew I was supposed to like one over the other.

I was hoping you were going to chime in here, Chuckles.

To quote you from another thread "I played an HR with the XL mod...and hated it." I was hoping that you might prefer the HR+ with the XL mod.

My guess, though, is that your dislike is probably more for the XL mod than the HR, no?

Re: Soldano Hot Rod Question

Whoops! My reading comprehension skills really need to improve.

XL mod...I missed that part. Neither of my HR50's had the XL mod. I did play an HR50 with the XL mod and hated what the XL did to the tone of the amp.

Put me down for a major dis-like of the XL mod.

FYI Fritz, if you can handle a soldering iron (I know you can) I can tell you how to de-XL one or add a variable depth control (which is what I did to mine). I turn a knob one way, no XL mod, turn it the other way, it adds it. Highly recommended.

Fritz, do you need channel switching versatility?

Re: Soldano Hot Rod Question

No, not really. I'm really digging the one channel Top Hat that I have. So, I would certainly be okay with one channel.

How much of a price difference is there in a used HR vs. HR+?

Re: Soldano Hot Rod Question

Couple hundred, on average of what I've seen.
The main reason I asked is I was wondering if you'd be interested in taking my Peters amp for a test ride for a couple weeks?
