• Question: Marshall JCM900 4500 50watt head

Whats your opinions of this amp? is there a greater liklihood that it will blow up versus other amps?

i have an opportunity to buy one for $400 CDN which i think is a great price.. and i know its been well maintained

but someone i know said they had 3 of them and they all blew up... whats the deal? should i buy this amp nonetheless?

the guy who has it now is the original owner and its a 95.... he owns a studio and it doesn't leave that place.

thanks,
- Peter

Those are punk rock amps!! Used by Lars Frederickson of Rancid, The Pete of the Bouncing Souls, and Justin Sane of Anti-Flag among others.

I used to use a couple 4100 heads live, that's big brother to the 4500 I guess?

They were useable but not exactly heavy sounding. More of a good rock amp. I ran a wireless into it to slam the front end and lotsa EQ to boost the bass it was lacking. That made ALL the differenc ein getting a heavier sound. But it still isn't MESA/5150/Uber heavy.

Strangely enough they worked ok, until a roadie dropped one into some wet sod at an outdoor show. Then it blew up, but it took a good hit I guess. It broke some ceramic resistors in it I believe, and was back onstage the next night thanks to good old Doctor Z.

I'm not a fan of newer Mrashall for their iffy construction and materials, but I was ok wit those to be honest. I just went to 5150s as they were heavier at the time.

Re: Question: Marshall JCM900 4500 50watt head

I had a JCM900 100 watt high gain dual reverb head - it was built better than the JCM2000s by FAR. Only really bad thing I noticed was the pots were board mounted, but that's typical nowadays.

The sound was decent... not as bad as some would lead you to believe. A good JCM800 would crap all over one though.

I've heard good things and bad things about the 900 series. For you Marshall-scholars, which ones are the better ones?

WTF?!? This is a guitar amp, not a '70s Ford Pinto.

The chances of it "exploding" should be about the same compared to most other tube amps. If you like the sound and if the price is right, get it.

Rule #1 of the JCF: All "new" Marshalls suck!

Rule #2 of the JCF: If anyone asks about "new" Marshalls, you tell them they suck.

...however much like the moivie "FightClub" most of these rumors are pure fantasy.

Nah, you just live in a fantasy!

New Marshalls do suck quite a bit bro, sorry to tell yas. It's not just something to say and argue about. I've owned many of them, broke some, found some weaknesses and dealt with Marshall/Korg service enough, haha... The 900s were the beginning of the end for that brand really.

Sadly, they aren't the only brand that has went downhill, so, can't really blame them for sucking, other than that they are still overpriced for the quality.

I would pass.

I was in the same situation, I was playing some 900's and 600's, feeling iffy about the deal, but then I came across a JCM 800 by pure luck and it eats any other marshall Ive ever seen.

All that is true, but thanks to their amazing inconsistency you may get a really good one like Pete had. That thing sounded amazing. I had one that sounded like crap. A buddy had one identical to mine and his ruled like Pete's did.

So there's your odds, 2:1 you get a good one!

...and if its a bad one, you can always throw it on ebay and pull a nice profit, as well as your money back.

By a local called Luiggi. He added an extra gain stage and a solo booster.
