On the album version, it's a Gibson 335 and I think a Marshall Plexi. Not sure, if you did a deja.com search you might find it. It's funny though, I think he gets damn close to that live, and I've always seen him play it with a stratocaster!
That's a lot of setting up! He's a freak anyway. Great tone! I hear he likes the "cheap" 9v batteries over alkaline. The voltage is different, which I understand, and he hears a difference in sound. I guess I'm just as bad. I like tubes with some hours on them over new tubes. The difference is subtle, but it sounds different.
Just take a look at the G3 he is in and gander at the damn pedalboard setup at his feet! It is a bloody nightmare! And I thought Alex Lifeson was a gear whore when he was younger lol.
Word had it that Eric's rig was a nightmare to mix back in the early 90's.
I think the fuzzface is for those brief moments where he wants controlled feedback or over the top distortion.
Th majority of his tone is probably derived with the tube driver. Which would in part explain why the prices on those skyrocketed on eBay.
Well, they were going @ slightly over 200.00 a couple years ago. I have the rack version as those were actually affordable but it sems to be a different component all together. Check out the Chandler stereo echo prices, another EJ/Satch used item..they ain't cheap either.
Eric's tube driver was custom built I think, or it's an early one. I don't think it's exactly the same as one off the rack. I'd have to do some digging, but I heard that somewhere. Just that tube driver isn't going to give you instant EJ tone.
In the 80's he used 2 twin reverbs , 100w dumble & 4x12 & 100w Marshall & 4x12. If you can find it He was on Austin city limits in the Mid 80's and you get a pretty good look at his setup. He preformed Cliffs of Dover on that show it's the preformance he wanted to use on the album but they wouldn't release it. His new setup as above started in Late 90's so it not his Cliffs of Dover sound.
