• Dunlop RotoVibe - which one??

Ok, been on an SRV kick lately and want to get a Dunlop RotoVibe pedal, but a scan of Ebay shows the JH-4S and JD-S - which one's the good/better one, and what are the major differences between the two (tonal quality, component/construction quality, etc)

None is the right model to get. I had one and tried one and it sounded pretty harsh. The Fulltone Deja-Vibe is the one to get - no question about it. It's what Trower uses these days too.

If you are interested in fooling with this on a budget - get a Danelectro Rocky Road. They can be had for 30-40 bucks. However, if you get one you MUST do the mod (I learned about it at H/C). I have the specs - all you do is jumper a resistor - I had no problems doing it. Also, it is completely reversible since you just remove the wire you added. In fact Newc, if you are interested in trying the Dano pedal out just send me the $$$ for shipping and you can borrow mine for a while since I just use my Deja-Vibe these days.

Thanks for the offer, Tim

Is the Dano an on/off pedal type or does it have a footpedal like the Dunlop?

The dano is an on/off pedal. Fulltone does a variable speed vibe pedal - mine is the Deja-Vibe 2 Stereo.

ive heard good things about the voodoo labs vibe but ive never actually used one. it is about half the price of a fulltone might be worth checkin out.

I had the Voodoo Lab Vibe also. It was ok. Not sure if I'd rate it much better than the Dunlop.

Hey Newc, if you do get one of these things - it will most likely sound best in front of all overdrive/distortion boxes. Every single one I tried sounded horrible after them.

Newc, one more thing to investigate is the Yamaha MagicStomp. They are like seriously dirt cheap - I got mine for $160 and there's a $40 mail-in rebate - a buddy got one for even less I think. Anyhow, I haven't spent a lot of time with the vibe effects on it but everything I've played with on this box sounds great. It's a kitchen sink multi-FX box that just kicks butt.

The one potential drawback is that a PC/Mac is required for detailed tweaking.

Ah, well then I'd defnitely need a pedal on it
My Uncle came up for New Year's and brought his Digitech A300 Artist pedal thingy and it sounded nice - had settings from Glenn Tipton and that Drover guy and a few other current "names", and it had a Rotovibe-type setting that sounded JUST like SRV on "Cold Shot", which is what I want, but without adding yet another multi-purpose jobby (already got the ADA, an FX unit, 3 Legends, and a POD, plus recently picked up an Akai DPS12 with the effects card in it - only thing I ain't got is a decent Roto )

What's the Fulltone usually run?

Re: Dunlop RotoVibe - which one??

The Fulltone is expensive as hell if you want the Deja-Vibe 2 (which is the one with the pedal) - even more if you want the stereo one (which is what I got).

I got mine cheap from GC in Seattle because of some goofball inventory blah, blah, blah thing (I wasn't really listening after the price quote).

Dude, are you SURE you need the pedal? The only reason I got the Deja-2 was because it was less money than the Deja-Vibe. I use mine all the time but never adjust the speed on the fly really.

I'd check Ebay for a Fulltone. Same for the Dunlop - they don't hold their value at all so you can score one cheap - believe me I know. Anyway, where were you like a month ago when I was trying to unload my mint Rotovibe? I lost a lot of money on that thing - I couldn't give the damn thing away.

I'd prefer a pedal on it, just for ease of adjustment. But then I can probably Newcenstein the Dano board into an old volume or wah case, then monkeyfck the knob to control the Rate.

oh the dano has one other cool feature - it has a ramp which simulates the drum spinning up - kinda fun.

Are you guys talking about Univibes or Rotovibes?? Univibes are the things that Hendrix used, with the little silver pedal and the expression pedal, and a Rotovibe is the red and chrome Crybaby-looking pedal that Zakk Wylde and Jerry Cantrell use.

What's the major tonal difference? The name of the factory patch in my Uncle's Digitech RP300A (not A300 thingy as mentioned earlier - oops) just said 'Vibe' - neither Uni nor Roto. I assumed the Roto was just an "enhanced" Uni.

Anyway, listen to SRV's Cold Shot for reference. I want whatever's gonna give me the effect heard on his guitar tracks for that song. Uni, Roto, Deja, Multi, MooMoo, whatever - as long as it's not a genuine 5-6 foot tall Leslie cabinet.

You're going for a Univibe type sound. A Rotovibe has it's own thing going on, more of a phaser meets chorus meets Univibe type thing, if that makes sense.

SRV used the Fender Vibratone which is very similar to a Leslie. A Vibratone is hard to find and ain't gonna be small or cheap.

A very kick ass alternative to any pedal is to get a Songworks Rotary Wave. I have one and it is freakin' cool. They are really small too.
