What about the Crate VC508? I never tried one, but it looks like it'd be cool through a better/bigger speaker. It's a little cheaper than the Mesa/THD, Soldano which without a doubt are great amps.

I second the Vox Valvetronix mention. It does have 1 tube in there and sure sounds good.

I'd say depending on your style a Mesa 22+ or a Twisteramps custom...

Dave, IMHO, if he goes from a 5150 combo to a VC508 he will be very unhappy. The VC508 is strictly a blues and 70's classic rock amp. Usually 5150 players are gain hogs.
IMHO, I don't think that a tube amp is best suited for bedroom type levels. For the bedroom, I would suggest a modeling amp by Line 6 or Roland. If full blown modeling is not his thing, I would look at the Tech 21 stuff.
There are many great high gain tube amps around by Mesa, Soldano, Peavey, Marshall, etc.. If money isn't an issue, I would give Chucks JP-10 a serious look. It is expensive and worth every single penny of it. That is possibly the best 10 watt "bedroom" amp you could probably find. I would love to get my hands on that one for sure. Pete (Twisteramps) listed a few kicking low wattage amps too. If I had the cash to spend I would be looking at one of his.

I've got a Marshall JCM2000 DSL201 20 watts 1 12" speaker, I put a set of JJ tubes in and a green back and with an MXr 10 EQ running in the effects loop it sounds great even at very low volume. If you can find one check it out.

                  http://zvexamps.com/amp_view.html
1/2 a watt, supposedly sounds awesome, but i've never played one.

Those Zvex amps sound like ass. Well, in my opinion anyway.

I guess it really doesnt matter if its tube or not...I'm not a tube snob or anything. I just want something that sounds good - to me if it sounds good, its good, no matter if its tube, digital or whatever. Anyways, does anybody have any clips of the mesa .22?

Re: Whats a good TUBE bedroom amp

What type of music are you playing? Just how quiet are we talking? Are we trying to not wake people in the house at night when playing? Or just trying not to bug the neighbors?

I AM one of the tube snobs. But, for really low volume playing, and even though I basically scoff at them, I'd still have to look to a spyder, or a POD PRO like thing into your PC. The latter, will give you a ton of effects to play with, and through headphone or PC , doesn't sound so bad. More flexible than most low watt tube amps.

If you're doing metal, you'd be served well to buy a fairly cool preamp and power amp to get the sound. Like a Peavey Rockmaster or a even a Sansamp PSA-1 or Korg HyperDistortion pedal (solid state but cool) and MESA 20/20 and a 1x12 cab. Tubish, and pretty cool actually. I just can't think of many small tube amps, that I'm aware of, that really give the chug or crunch.

Re: Whats a good TUBE bedroom amp

I have the Soldano Astroverb (same as the Atomic except with reverb) 1x12 and IMO it's still too loud for bedroom levels if you want it to really sound its best. On the other hand, it is still pretty good at low volume and is also loud enough to play with other people should you want/need to. BUT it has no headphone out so you can't really use it if you want to keep from waking people up.

Depends on your style of music like others have said. If you want to play ultra-clean Jazz or insane Nu-Metal tuned down to G#, the Soldano won't do it very well. It does most everything in-between well though.

Re: Whats a good TUBE bedroom amp

I tend to play stuff thats not super saturated with gain...guns n roses type gain. I tend to lean more towards blues rock stuff more often than crazy shredder stuff. I usually have my 5150 set at 5 on the preamp gain...so nothing too heavy.

I keep a Tech 21 Tri-AC pedal at home, which I send through my PC. Great for recording and low-volume playing. Cheap, too: About $130.
