My ten watt Peters head.
It has the smoothest taper on the master I've ever heard, it's ten watts that sounds great at whisper volumes and can get rather loud as well.

I've heard this Peters of which he speaks. It's like a bedroom version of an SLO! Very nice. But, it's NOT cheap. But, you get what you pay for!

Songworks make at 1/4 watt all tube bedroom/recording amp. They are pretty cool. You can find them on the songworks site or do a google search. I know it took forever to get the rotary wave speaker I ordered from Tris.

if not having tubes is not an issue, try a tech 21 amp.
i just got a tm60 and it sounds great at any volume.
the only downside is that it can use more gain.
but the distortion is fine for most hard rock to some metal stuff.

IommiChild, take a look at the Tech 21 gear or a Boogie Subway Rocket. The Rocket sounds good at low volumes and can get loud enough to jam with. The Tech 21 stuff is incredible and has a proven track record. Both can be had cheap and are readily available.

That thing of Chuckracers is supposed to be pretty damn cool too. He'd probably dry hump ya if you took it off his hands, or at the very least he'd send toejam over.

I tend to play stuff thats not super saturated with gain...guns n roses type gain. I tend to lean more towards blues rock stuff more often than crazy shredder stuff.

I agree with your choice to get rid of the 5150 then..Sounds like too much amp for your situation and the sound you are shooting for.

You need a Boogie Studio .22+.. Make sure you get the plus model though as it has an EQ which is a HUGE upgrade.

I, like you, play at bedroom levels all the time. ( I play at 4:00 a.m. with mom and the babies sound asleep in la la land) and te Boogie has outstanding Slash tone at below "1" settings on the volume knob.

Don't get me wrong.. That Boogie is loud as hell when you crank it! But, I like mine so much for the bedroom volumes.. it sounds great.. I bought mine off of a forum member for $375. shipped and it was a great deal IMHO.

Mine is not the "Plus" model so I am actively seeking one out as we speak. Even if you can't find a plus model, get the Studio .22 and you will be happy..

Tech 21 Trademark 10 or the 60, great solid state amps. The Mesa .22 plus would be ideal. I use a Peavy Ultra 60 watt 1x12 and it rocks hard and sounds great at any volume. I am currently looking for the 100 watt head version of this amp as I love it so much. It`s like a Triple XXX with a little less gain, but I use mine with a Boss MT-2 pedal alot of the times thru the clean and crunch channles, the ultra channel is great by itself and these amps have the resonance switch for tight-medium and loose bass. They also have nice spring reverb. About $200-300 used. jack.

1/2 a watt, supposedly sounds awesome, but i've never played one.

These sound like crap. Wait, I take that back. If they were to improve the tone a bit it would sound like crap.

I have two small amps I'd recommend.

First is a Fender Pro Junior. It's not a metal amp but it sounds kick ass and is very happy to have pedals in front of it. You have to replcae the shitty stock speaker though. Celestion Vintage 10's work great.

The other is a Songworks Little Lanilei 3350LT. Incredibly small and sounds really cool. It has much more hair in the tone - think Marshall style VH1 level distortion rather than triple rectifier. This thing can get loud as snot if you want and easily drives a 4x12 as well.

If you liked the 5150 and want a similar head. Try an Engl Fireball, it's 60 watts and plays at speaking levels great. It is a HEAVY METAL amp. Pefect at bedroom levels.
