Re: Carvins new amp !!!

Mine's the EL34, but you can put 6L6's in it. The clean tone is about as good as there is, besides a Fender Twin or a Roland JC. The "lead" channel is really just a nice rhythm sound, old Iron Maiden no problem. I use a pedal in front of it for real lead tones, usually an Ibanez Tube Screamer (or the BOSS OD-20 on its Tube Screamer setting). The graphic EQ that you can assign to one channel or the other is kinda weird, but makes me think of the two channels almost as two different amps. It has a power cut switch like Carvin's newer amps, but it does 25% power as well as 50%.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

I had one of the earlier X100B heads, with the tolex cover and "script" Carvin logo. It sounded great with a Metal Zone/GE-7 EQ combination.

No footswitch for this amp? If it sounds nice, I may pick up a used one. After ditching the JCM800, I need a back up for my Mesa, incase anything ever happened (YIPES!), and if this gets good sounds, and is affordable on eBay, then I'm all over it.

If you're buying gear for resale, quit playing. I don't buy my crap to see if it will sell for more. If I buy something, and it sounds good, it sounds good, that's that.

*****The problem with Carvin gear is that there seems to be absolutely no resale value on it...*****

But at the same time Carvin offers some of the best sounding amps, and at the same time offer some of the best build quality at the price point (better build quality than Peavey IMO) that you probably won't want to sell it. I know I would never sell my Legacy head, and I have had that for almost 5 years now, and the attachment gets stronger ever time I use it!

I guess I should clarify exactly what I ment by that... I would never buy a new Carvin because of the resale value. My bass guitar (LB75) and bass head (R1000) are both awesome, but I would never buy them brand new because they're available on ebay or from other people for ridiculously low prices. Carvin does indeed produce some awesome gear.

I bought my Legacy new, and I think it was $100 more than they are now. The amp is worth every penny. I don't regret it one bit.

Wow, the Legacy has been around for 5 or more years now? I thought it was relatively a new amp! Unless I read it wrong...

It's been around since the mid to late '90s IIRC.

That's something I can't comprehend either. I'm sure it's gotta have some kind of footswitch.

Re: Carvins new amp !!!

thebisch said it was MIDI controllable. So you'd have to get a controller.

Carvin has always been weird about footswitches. My X-100B has a 3-button switch with an XLR conector, and I had a ProBass-500 amp with the same configuration. The Quad-X had a gigantic footswitch with 7 buttons on it, connected with a serial port type connector. Then for several years there, they dumped everything but the 2-button style with the 1/4" RCA plug.

Now with their 3-channel solid state amps, they're moving back in the other direction. This new amp may not have the same controls as the other 3-channel amps (no reverb, for example), so maybe they're opting not to have to stock another accessory. I hear their facilites are pretty well packed to the ceiling with product. I know the only reason they don't offer the standard Bolt guitars with Floyds is because if they did, they'd have to stock more pickguards.

That's my guess, anyway.

Re: Carvins new amp !!!

Yea, supposedly it is fully MIDI controllable. Fine with me, if there are no switching delays. If there is any sort of delay, then I would never consider it. The switching on the legacy is instant and silent...

I think the Legacy came out in like '98 or '99 IIRC...

Another thing Carvin might have considered on the footswitch:

Rivera has a proprietary footswitch/controller for their Knucklehead amps, called the "Head Master," which connects by a MIDI-type connector. There are *two* MIDI sockets on the back of the amp, however — one for the Head Master, the other for a general MIDI control device. The manual explained it by saying that their proprietary switch was not a standard MIDI controller, but they made the connector the same so in case the switch died a working musician wouldn't have to wait for a replacement... just use a standard MIDI controller. The danger is, of course, if you plug the switch or the controller into the wrong socket, you could damage something because their switch sends and receives voltage on different pins than a MIDI controller.

The Solodano Deccatone is the same way. Its own foot switch uses a midi cable, but isn't a midi controller.

I would rather have a good multi function footswitch than use a MIDI controller. Jack.
