Marshall Valvestate 8100 Head

Are these anygood? What is a good price for them?



I like the heavy distortion tone with nice palm muting sound.
I will try to find a 2x12 Cab for it also.

I had one. It's thin sounding. It sounds like a Marshall until you actually hear a real Marshall.
Hi gain and thin. I paid $200.00 for one around 4 years ago that was mint flawless condition with the original footswitch. I think they still sell for around that much.

i think the avt series is way better but its still no jcm 800.

i'd rather have a fender roc pro 1000 for the same price. way better.

my crate g130c killed any valvestate out there.

not to knock on ya. or that i'm a tube snob. there is just way better out there than the mg or valvestate lines.

fender m-80 or rock pro would do ya way better. hell, probably one of those new ibanez guitar heads too.

i know chuck shouldnier used them - but i never liked there live sound. just couldn't really hear it. you can get a good recording sound out of them but that is about it.

No because:
They sound to thin, my Crate GFX1200H (solid state) is way better, and I also think the avt series is better also. I'm not a tube snob either, but I really like my Crate BV120H..that rocks.
There are several better choices IMO..but if you like it, cool.

Also, I've heard from many people that the older Randall RG100ES and the RG80ES were decent high gain solid state amps. You can get them cheap on Ebay all day long.

I believe Tommy Victor from Prong, Chuck Schuldiner and James Murphy used the 8100s with great results. I remember James saying the bass was very tight on them and he used them on his band Disincarnate's album. I've got an old '92 2x12 Valvestate 8240 stereo chorus combo and think it's great, especially with the contour control where you can manipulate the mid frequency besides just the normal midrange. IMO, the older Valvestates sound better than the newer line.
And as far as the Fender Roc Pro 1000 head, I've also got one of those and think that rocks, too!

Glen Drover/Eidolon uses them, Mike Wead/King Diamond/ Merciful Fate does also, as well as the misc Candlemess guitarists and a lot of the guys from that area that are in the Doom metal click there.

Not that I like the tone much, but they do well with them.

I have never heard one of these, but I likes the Fender Stage 100 thru a 4x12, nice gain and bottom end, but I will still take a high gain 6L6 based tube amp over any solid state amp. Jack.

We have one of those 8100s at work and all I can say is, I can't believe that the aforementioned guys used them. It sounds horrible to me.
