  • New Purchase Advice Time!

Warning - I tried to keep this organized, but it may not flow as well as it should.

Well Hello there JCF. Here's the deal:

I recently discovered that playing with other people (or at least over a recorded rhythm track) not only sounds way better than playing alone, it is much more useful as practice. With that in mind, I'm considering selling my amp and getting a new setup from scratch so I can be my own rhythm section. I have no real experience with anything besides guitars and basic amps, so I'm not sure what exactly to get or how to set it up.

Here's a basic summary of what I want to do:

At first I just want to throw down a chord progression, then loop it and practice leads on top of it (preferably using 2 different guitar tones). I have a grand vision that it will eventually grow from that to playing full songs, perhaps adding a drum machine. In the more distant future, it would be nice to be able to add different instruments as well (namely bass, keyboard, or vocals).

Here are possible solutions I'm thinking of:

Korg PX4R - It seems to have everything in one fairly cheap unit, though I am unsure of the quality.

Boss RC-20XL along with some sort of modeling/effects processor (POD, PX4, Whatever)

Digitech GNX of some sort - I know there are at least 4 versions of this, don't know much about them but it seems they do a lot of stuff.

Just a modeling unit/effects processor (again POD, PX4, etc), and do everything else in software - I don't know anything about recording software just yet, but I imagine this fairly simple task would be possible to do with some software.

I guess I'm looking for any and all opinions on these products or others and advice/suggestions/experiences that you think may be helpful.

Some facts that may be important (ask me if there's anything else I didn't list):

This is going to be played through headphones and/or a stereo system.
I play mostly shred stuff, or at least use shreddy guitar tones.
It needs to sound good enough to play every day and maybe post clips online, but I'm not out to land a record deal or anything.
I use a Mac iBook G4 mainly, but also own a PC if I absolutely have to use one.
I don't plan on ever playing live, so if you're going to recommend an actual amp don't say anything over like 40-50 lbs.
I can probably spend up to $1000, but would prefer to keep it FAR below that.

I think that covers just about everything. Sorry if this doesn't read very well, and thanks in advance for any help!

I can't comment on what's out there for the G4 but I'd seriously consider picking up something like: an Audiophile 24/96 sound card (PC ~$100); a copy of something along the lines of Sonar XL (great recording / sequencing software, ~$65 on the 'bay for a previous version which is more than you'll ever need); some SW plug-ins for Sonar to make your MIDI sequences sound a little more realistic (I personally like Edirol's Hyper-Canvas for bass / synths and Super Quartet for drums but YMMV). That'll take care of your looping / sequencing / recording needs, from there just add your favoritely flavor of guitar fx unit / modeller and you're set.

I should also have mentioned that I am a bad person and will likely acquire software illegally, so no worries about it being expensive!

        Re: New Purchase Advice Time!

I have the Pandora PX4 (not PXR4), which is an amazing device, but does have some limitations, e.g., there are no really crushing metal tones in it, and the phrase sampler sound quality gets very poor when you slow the phrase down. I would guess the PXR4 is similar, but with added recording ability. If you need the portability, you've got it, but I wouldn't choose it if you don't need the portability.

From what I've read, the GNX4 is designed to do exactly what you're after, and having had a GNX1 before, these devices do have some really nice sounds in them. I think Digitech's web site has some demo videos which should be useful to you.

        Good luck!

I ordered a regular PX4 to try. Should be here Thursday or Friday, hopefully that along with some decent software will be enough.

What I mean is I do not intend to be a gigging musician. I do not like to compromise, and joining/starting a band that would actually get to play in front of people involves too much compromise.

I'm a very anti-social individual. Even if I could impress people, I don't really want to talk to them. Regular casual conversation/interaction with most people is something I try to avoid whenever possible.

Besides all of that, I don't drink or smoke and hate being around others who do. A bar is one of the worst places I could ever imagine.

Damn bro, maybe it's better you don't be a gigging musician, lol. Dunno, whatever floats yer boat. I think that GNX4 might be a cool thing too, I mean it's got the tones, the drum machine and the recorder. Haven't tried it or know anyone who has though, so couldn't tell ya if it is worth it or not.

I have a GNX2, a rackmount PODpro and a Behringer Vamp. The GNX2 is the most versitile and best sounding LIVE unit, I believe you can get one now for approx. $250. The pod is the best sounding for DI rythyms, I bought mine on clearance for $350. I say DI rythyms because I use the GNX2 for DI soloing, (I think it sounds better) As for the Vamp, it's sittin in a corner collecting dust, I will sometimes use it for bass tones though. This one is the cheapest and can be had for about $150-$200. It also is the one that sounds the most "digital" or grainy. I wouldn't recommend it.

I bought a Johnson J-Station for the same reason as you are looking to get into this: I needed to be able to lay down lead, rhythm and bass tracks at home. In my case, it was to demo songs for my band. The J-Station was a good choice because it has both guitar and bass amp models, comes with Cakewalk Guitar Tracks to get started, and was cheap. I'm not saying that it has a better tone than other products, but it's very capable for the bargain price.
