Warning - I tried to keep this organized, but it may not flow as well as it should.
Well Hello there JCF. Here's the deal:
I recently discovered that playing with other people (or at least over a recorded rhythm track) not only sounds way better than playing alone, it is much more useful as practice. With that in mind, I'm considering selling my amp and getting a new setup from scratch so I can be my own rhythm section. I have no real experience with anything besides guitars and basic amps, so I'm not sure what exactly to get or how to set it up.
Here's a basic summary of what I want to do:
At first I just want to throw down a chord progression, then loop it and practice leads on top of it (preferably using 2 different guitar tones). I have a grand vision that it will eventually grow from that to playing full songs, perhaps adding a drum machine. In the more distant future, it would be nice to be able to add different instruments as well (namely bass, keyboard, or vocals).
Here are possible solutions I'm thinking of:
Korg PX4R - It seems to have everything in one fairly cheap unit, though I am unsure of the quality.
Boss RC-20XL along with some sort of modeling/effects processor (POD, PX4, Whatever)
Digitech GNX of some sort - I know there are at least 4 versions of this, don't know much about them but it seems they do a lot of stuff.
Just a modeling unit/effects processor (again POD, PX4, etc), and do everything else in software - I don't know anything about recording software just yet, but I imagine this fairly simple task would be possible to do with some software.
I guess I'm looking for any and all opinions on these products or others and advice/suggestions/experiences that you think may be helpful.
Some facts that may be important (ask me if there's anything else I didn't list):
This is going to be played through headphones and/or a stereo system.
I play mostly shred stuff, or at least use shreddy guitar tones.
It needs to sound good enough to play every day and maybe post clips online, but I'm not out to land a record deal or anything.
I use a Mac iBook G4 mainly, but also own a PC if I absolutely have to use one.
I don't plan on ever playing live, so if you're going to recommend an actual amp don't say anything over like 40-50 lbs.
I can probably spend up to $1000, but would prefer to keep it FAR below that.
I think that covers just about everything. Sorry if this doesn't read very well, and thanks in advance for any help!
