How strat-like are the EMG single coils.

I need a backup for my EMG equipped Les Paul, and all I have is a strat. Although I really don't use it that much anymore, I still would want the strat sounds if I'm just playing some blues with friends or whatever, but want an 81 or whatever in the bridge in case my LP goes down. So anyway, I'd be wireing in a HSS EMG set up myself. I know you can mix and match active with passive, but I don't wanna screw with that, so I was wondering how strat-like the EMG single coils are. Thanks.

I only have experience with the EMG-S (ceramic) and that was probably the cleanest single coil I've ever used. Very spiky, glassy, and quacky. I have no experience with the EMG-SA (alnico) though.

If you need a thick humbucker tone out of EMG single coils, you can add the EMG-SPC (Strat Presence Control) circuit to replace one of the tone knobs on your Strat. It basically boosts the mids, giving you a fatter tone. David Gilmour is known for using a Strat equipped with the EMG-SPC and EMG-EXG replacing his tone controls.

i have the SA's in one of my axe's they are a little warmer than the S models. they sound great. but i would probably be better off with the S based on the style of metal i like to play. but the SA's do sound great.

Sa are very nice sounding slightly compressed . I find they have a single coil sound without the noise of a single coil and are a good choice for any type of music.
