  • Peavey 5150 combo idea..cut it in half???

Ok bought this amp a few months ago.I gig about every weekend. The thing is just too heavy to lug around.Anyone thought of cutting the 2-12" part off and making it just a head?Any ideas, thoughts please let me know if this is a possibility...thanks,Cort

The problem with that is that the tubes hang upside down with the controls facing up. If you made a head out of it the tubes would be horizontal which would not workout very well. I had 2 5150 heads and a combo over the years. I sold the combo for the same exact reason. Even with casters it was a monster to carry around. PM me if you want some suggestions. I have been in your exact situation.

I did see a 5150 combo made into a 60 watt head on e-bay. Don't know how he did it but it has been done. I'm pretty sure he said he just cut the bottom off and used the bottom plank for the bottom of the head.

seriously, a few hours at the gym and some protein shakes...much better than hacking up a thousand dollar amp....

Sell it and buy a head. That chopped up head looks like a$$.

Seriously, don't mess with the thing. Sell it and get a head.

Maybe if you are tall but think about it. Putting that on a full stack would mean you would have to use a step ladder to see the controls. I think a very important feature of an amp head is the ability to see the controls from where you are standing.

I assume that if his 2x12 combo is good enough for gigging, he could either put the head on a 2x12 cab or even a 4x12. That way he would only have problems if he was under 3 feet tall...

Why wouldn't you just go for the head? The only thing that is lost is the reverb... Get a head and a 2 - 12 cab

I use the combo with a Marshall JCM 800 4x12 cabinet..The contols are hard to see even with one cabinet.I'm 5 10"... .Ok who wants to trade a head for the combo?
