  • Need Advice on Marshall JCM800's

OK I have been really in the purchasing mood for a JCM800, I have found two I can get now. Both are Canadian Version JCM800's.

The first is a JCM800 2204 in black, the case that houses it has been beat and repaired but it is still very good, everyone works great on it no mods. I can get this amp in a Gator case for $915 shipped.

The second AMP is a white 2203 in Great shape physically and supposedly electronically. The only thing that worries me is that the amp has two holes drilled professionally in the back that looks to be for a effects loop, however the seller assures me the mod was never completed. I can get this amp for $1100 shipped.

My question to you guys is what do you think of these prices and these pieces of equipment?

Oh my other question, is there any difference between the 2204's made in 87 and the ones made earlier in the 80's. I think as long as they are vertical inputs they are exactly the same, please correct me if i am wrong.

    Any advise would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Todd

Re: Need Advice on Marshall JCM800\'s

I think they are both overpriced although the 2203 is closer to what they go for especially in white-But my advice is that you really got to play these. They vary so much in sound. I have heard some that sound great and some that don't-Although a retube and bias will help, I think Marshall just put whatever is laying around in them- It just my opinion but for a grand for a JCM it better be great-

I think you can find a 2204 from 5-600 and a 2203 from 600-800 depending- You probably won't find a white one though-

My question is if no mod what are the holes-My guess would be a removed mod- I am no expert on marshalls but I have a 2204 I bought new in 87 and I have thought about dumping it a couple times- They do the beat one is way over priced-mint 500-600 plus case and shipping- the 2203 are in demand but still seems high and especially with the holes-There are still a ton of these around and if you pick one up for 500-600 or so it won't be a big deal to retube and bring it to spec-but a grand seems-guess it depends how bad you want it and how hard cash is to come by for you

Hope it helps- I think the 2203's have better low end than the 50 watt

Buy the equivalent JCM combo for about half that and just use the amp as a head, or just take the amp out and buy a loose case ..they pop up on eBay from time to time. If you have a little amp skill, you can get by alot cheaper.

These are the Canadian models with the metal toggle switches and the verticle inputs on both. I know the verticles and as well as the toggle switch ones are more in demand. Latley all the JCM800's seem to be going up in price.

Todd, how come you aren't talking to me about my #2210 that I had listed? If you are looking for a JCM800 2203,04, I would suggest looking hard at a 2210.
Talk to me... I am thinking about selling it considering I never use it.

Re: Need Advice on Marshall JCM800\'s

It's been a while since you could buy a 2204 for 500-600, and even longer since you could buy a 2203 for 600-800. The going rate one those amps are closer to 800.00 for the 2204, and 1000-1200.00 on 2203's. I think it's kinda crazy, but that's what they're bringing.

The 2204 you're looking at is a bit high, considering the tolex is beat, but if the road case is high quality, it might not be too bad.

The holes in the 2203 are hard to tell about. People have been modding, and demodding Marshalls for decades. If it was removed Correctly, it won't be an issue, but If I were you, I'd want to see some pics of the circuit board. The price on the white JCM 800's seems to be a bit higher than the black, so that's a good price including shipping IMHO.

I personally prefer the 2203's tone, they have a lot more balls, and crunch than the 2204's, but I prefer 100 watt amps over 50 watt amps every time I try, so I may just be biased to a particular sound of 100 watters. Some prefer 50 watts, so that's subjective.

There weren't really any changes in the 2204's. The 2205/2210 was changed some in 85, and again in 87, and the 2203 lost 3 filter caps in 85 along with the horizontal input change, but the 2204's were pretty much unchanged throughout their production.

Marshall JCM800 prices have recently gone through the roof.
I should just sit on my 2210 until my youngest is ready for college!!

                  Hey JC,

Thanks for the offer but i am just looking for either 2204 or a 2303, I was never a big fan of the 2205/2210's. You might want to throw it on ebay though, they are starting to sell for alot latley too, seems they are now in demand and with that free mojo you are throwing in it might fetch more.

As to the other marshalls, the canadian ones seem to bring in more money these days and yes the white ones seem to bring in more as well. As to to the beat 2204, it is only cosmetic and the rest of the amp is fine, a regular 2204 non candian model with better tolex just sold for 899 plus 55 shipping.

                  adrenaline junkie,

Is there a big tone difference between the 50 and 100 watt? I sometimes prefer 50 watts as i dont need it so loud and i love to saturate the tubes. As long as it sounds very close to the same just not as loud i would rather have the 50 watter.

                            Todd,
There isn't a huge difference, but there's also not that much difference in Volume. A 50 watt JCM 800, is loud enough to shake pictures off of walls. There's only a 3db sound difference between the 2203 and the 2204. That's the same amount you'll gain by taking the casters off of a 4x12 cabinet. The 2204 will break up a little sooner so it is a little less lound, but they both sound their best cranked up to about 7, so it's not really all that much quieter. The 2203 has a more ballsy low end thump than the 2204. I'm not talking about Volume, but that thump that you feel in your gut and chest, that's the main difference in tone IMHO.
