• Yet another recto question- 6l6 or el34

have triple-when I got it it had 6l6 only they were the ones that came in the amp and its one of the first 50 three channels so its been around a while-

Anyway bought some svetlana el34s and replaced the mesa 6l6(sovtek I guess) a couple years ago and well ...thinking about picking up some 6l6's -anyone expieriences or advice

I got a bro deal some JJ preamp tubes from afellow JCF'er(donnie cretsinger thanks again) and it perked up. So I thought I would retube the power section-its due

I had JJ 6l6's in a 2205 and it rocked for lead but seemed a little thin but I have 6550's in my 2204(which I canged out-it was an el34 amp) anyway had a couple glasses a wine so .....fire away

I prefer the 6L6s, personally. I like the natural "scoop", especially in a Recto.
Division - American Metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on Facebook.

I HATE EL34s....my least fave power amp tube.

I prefer the EL34s, the 6L6's sound sterile to me on rhythms. But it's all personal choice, either way it will sound good, just different.

With a Triple and all the options it has I don't see the need for EL34's. The vintage setting on spongy with the midrange turned up is pretty much what EL34's sound like.

I use whatever the Mesa STR 454 or 545 is whatever the hell one. They are 6L6s, but off hand, I don't know who makes them. I don't like EL34s.

Fett, the old fart, says buy vintage 6l6's on the net. The older tubes are built better because they were used all the time. The same goes for 12AX7's. Look for a seller that tests the tubes on a mutual conductance tester. The TV7 testers do that, as the Hickocks. You may have to pay more, but the quality is soooo much better. El-34's have that Marshall magic and command pretty high prices. I'm 54 and I haven't burned out yet. The same goes for old tubes.

Yep, Bob rocks!! He sent me 2 JJ 6L6`s rated at 41m per and 3 JJ high gain 12AX7`s and 1 Balanced JJ 12AX7 for the 4th position. My amp sounds so killer I called him right up and thanked him many times and promised to buy all of my tubes from now on from him and said I would reccomend him to my bros!! Jack.

I like Bob, but what annoys me is his bias thing on the recto amps.

Ya man, the Ultra 1x12 combos are killer for the money and with the high gain JJs and JJ 6L6s at 41ma per tube, it is a screamer, just more crushing with the MT-2 pedal. I am going to have to try the Graphic EQ thru it. Jack.

EL34s were my favorite in the reverse chassis early recto I had. I like dealing with Lord Valve for tubes. Never dealt with Mike at KCA, but he posts a lot on H/C and is a knowledgeable guy with tons of NOS tubes. One bad thing about Eurotubes is that they have a JJ focus... and those aren't the best tubes for every amp, no matter what the hype he lays down.

Oh, www.dougstubes.com is a great place for new tubes cheap - he carries a lot more than just the JJ stuff. I've dealt with him too, great guy, I just enjoy dealing with Lord Valve a little more.
